The next installment of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise is underway.
Mortal Kombat II is a fantasy action movie based on the well-known video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film features returning cast members Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. New to the series are Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.
While the script for Mortal Kombat III is still being developed, actress Liu Yifei, who plays Kitana, is already considering the future of her character. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she discussed what she’d like to see in the next film, specifically hoping it explores the complex relationship between Kitana and her sister, Mileena.
Rudolph responded to fan theories about whether her character’s friend, Jade (played by Tati Gabrielle), might take over Mileena’s part in Kitana’s storyline. She explained that she doesn’t think Jade will replace Mileena, as the history of Mortal Kombat still allows for the sisters’ relationship to be further developed.
Rudolph explained that Kitana is over 10,000 years old, creating a significant gap between the events shown in the movie and her full history. Even though Kitana’s character has died, Rudolph feels there’s still potential to explore the complex relationship between Kitana and Mileena. She also emphasized that Jade should be seen as a key character in the Mortal Kombat films, not just someone filling another character’s role.
During the interview, the actor shared that Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter for Mortal Kombat II, is nearly finished with the second draft of the Mortal Kombat III script. While she doesn’t know where the story is headed, she expressed hope that the sequel will incorporate elements from the video games.
Originally an arcade game, Mortal Kombat has grown into a huge entertainment franchise. It’s become the best-selling fighting game of all time, with more than 100 million copies sold, and is now one of the most successful gaming properties ever.
Mortal Kombat II is playing in theaters now.
