Every so often, a film’s production is more fascinating – and scandalous – than the movie itself. When it comes to this particular film, it’s difficult to find a more controversial story.

The film, created by , who moved from acting to producing and directing after their popular CW show finished, did well in theaters. Despite some controversy and behind-the-scenes difficulties, it was a hit with viewers. You can still stream It Ends With Us on Netflix, but it will be removed on June 8th.

What Happens in It Ends With Us?

This film is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel of the same name, and it’s the first time one of her books has been made into a full-length feature film. Hoover gained a large following in the mid-2010s, and while a movie version of her book Ugly Love was planned but never made, her 2015 novel Confess was adapted into a seven-part series for Go90.

It Ends With Us tells the story of Lily Bloom, a woman determined to escape a difficult past and build a new life. After the death of her abusive father, she moves to Boston and opens a flower shop. There, she meets and falls for Ryle Kincaid, a captivating neurosurgeon, but her journey towards independence and healing is just beginning.

I was really invested in Lily’s relationship at first, but things started to unravel, and she began to see some unsettling similarities between her romance and her parents’ troubled marriage. To complicate things, she reconnected with Atlas, her first love! As she noticed more and more warning signs, she realized she had to take control and make a really tough decision about her future, all on her own.

Blake Lively, known for her role in Gossip Girl, played Lily Bloom in the film, while Baldoni starred as Ryle. Baldoni also directed and produced the movie, which was written by Christy Hall, who also served as a producer alongside Jamey Heath, President of Wayfarer Studios.

Critics had a mixed reaction to the movie, giving it an approval rating of 55% and labeling it as ‘rotten’. Many found the dialogue awkward and felt the film didn’t fully address the serious issue of domestic violence, possibly because it was initially intended as a romantic comedy.

Despite the criticism, both audiences and fans of the original 2016 book generally enjoyed the movie. Moviegoers rated it highly, with an 87% approval score, and many appreciated its handling of difficult subjects. Sequels are common in Hollywood, and It Ends With Us seems ripe for one. The movie did well at the box office, viewers liked it, and author Colleen Hoover actually wrote a follow-up novel to her 2019 book. That sequel, It Starts With Us, was released in 2022.
