The Mandalorian and Grogu promises to be out of this world.
Jon Favreau brought The Mandalorian to life, a live-action Star Wars series that takes place five years after Return of the Jedi. The show centers on bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they navigate a galaxy still recovering from the Empire’s defeat. It’s become a huge hit on Disney+ and is credited with breathing new life into the Star Wars franchise for both longtime fans and a new generation.
Fans are excited to see a beloved pair from the Star Wars world together again, now playing on the big screen. Early reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu are starting to come in, and the response is varied – some people are enjoying the film’s lightheartedness, while others aren’t sure about the idea itself.
Molly Freeman from ScreenRant was among the first to see the movie and gave high marks to Pedro Pascal, Grogu, and Jeremy Allen White (from The Bear), who plays the new character Rotta the Hutt. She said, “I went into The Mandalorian & Grogu as a casual Star Wars fan without many expectations, and I really enjoyed it! Pedro Pascal is fantastic, Grogu is absolutely charming, and Jeremy Allen White is surprisingly good as Rotta the Hutt. While the pacing had a few issues, it was a lot of fun overall.”
Kevin Erdmann of ScreenRant, a dedicated Star Wars fan, recently shared his enthusiastic reaction to the new movie. He described it as “The Way” – a clear nod to the series – and said it was a hugely enjoyable experience that reminded him why the Star Wars galaxy is so beloved. Erdmann mentioned he’ll be sharing more thoughts soon on ScreenRant and highlighted that this is the first Star Wars film in seven years.
Germain Lussier, a senior reporter at Gizmodo, voiced his disappointment with the newest installment in the Star Wars franchise, which has worried many longtime fans. He described the latest episode of The Mandalorian and Grogu as being what viewers expected – longer and more expansive – but felt it prioritized introducing new settings and creatures over developing its characters. While he found parts of it enjoyable, he ultimately left feeling frustrated with the direction of the story.
Entertainment reporter Jonathan Sim wasn’t a fan of The Mandalorian and Grogu, calling the newest installment the weakest in the series. He described it as a predictable and emotionally flat experience that didn’t offer much development for the main character, Din Djarin. Sim also criticized the action sequences, finding them boring and relying too heavily on computer-generated imagery, and ultimately felt it resembled a lengthy and unremarkable television movie.
Journalist Joseph Deckelmeier was happily surprised by The Mandalorian and Grogu, especially enjoying the character of Rotta. He shared, “I enjoyed the show much more than I anticipated. The first few episodes were what I expected, but I really fell in love with Rotta the Hutt. And it was great to see Grogu take on a heroic role. Star Wars simply feels best when experienced on the big screen.”
Marc Malkin of Variety admits he’s not a huge Star Wars expert, but he loved The Mandalorian and Grogu, even though some other reporters had mixed feelings. He described the show as simply ‘fun’ and ‘like an amusement park ride,’ perfect for someone who isn’t a die-hard fan. He believes it’s now time for Grogu to star in his own movie.
Erik Davis of Fandango expressed his enthusiasm for the new movie and the return of Star Wars to theaters. He called the film a “thrilling adventure” and went on to share what he particularly enjoyed about it.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is a really exciting adventure with lots of action, strange creatures, and, of course, sweet moments with Grogu. It doesn’t focus too much on detailed backstory; instead, it’s a fun and wild ride across the galaxy, and I especially enjoyed that.
I especially loved the music by Ludwig Göransson, particularly how it echoed the sound of ’80s horror and action movies. Martin Scorsese’s cameo was a highlight, as was the performance by the Anzellans. This installment reminded me how much fun Star Wars can be when it doesn’t get bogged down in strict continuity and just lets loose. If you approach it as a classic, fast-paced adventure, you’re in for a great time.
Film and TV critic Tessa Smith enjoyed The Mandalorian, especially Grogu, whom she called the cutest Star Wars character. She said if you find Grogu adorable, you’ll likely enjoy the show, which focuses on charming, funny scenes and exciting action more than complex plot or dialogue. While she thought it was generally good, she felt it was too lengthy, but was pleased to see the character Zeb brought to life on screen.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will be soaring into theaters on May 22.
