Rebecca Ferguson is starring in the fantasy adventure film The Magic Faraway Tree. It’s already been released in many countries, but U.S. audiences haven’t had a chance to see it yet.
Despite this, there’s been a lot of excitement about making a movie based on the popular book series, leading to discussions about future films. Producers Pippa Harris and Danny Perkin recently confirmed they’re considering not one, but two sequels.
The Magic Faraway Tree Could Continue
Ben Gregor brings a new fantasy adventure to the screen, based on the beloved children’s books by Enid Blyton. Producers Harris and Perkin have revealed they’ve been…
Harris explained that they first attempted to secure the rights around 20 years ago. Having operated Neal Street for over 25 years, it was one of their initial projects, but the complex rights issues took a significant amount of time to resolve.
The movie has been popular internationally, so the filmmakers are planning two additional films based on the original book series. According to producer Harris, it’s a natural progression, as audiences have grown to love the characters – both the human family and the magical creatures – and the cast enjoyed making the first film so much that they’re eager to return.
The film’s producer celebrated its success, describing the current market as full of potential. They explained that capturing a family audience with one movie creates opportunities for expanding the story into other areas, like the stage show and other projects, as Studiocanal has already demonstrated.
Perkins emphasized the potential to build on the film’s success, noting they’ve only begun to explore the story’s rich world and characters. Having already done the foundational work of introducing everything, they’re eager to expand the narrative, as the source material offers endless possibilities. The cast enjoyed working on the film and are enthusiastic about returning for future installments.
The Magic Faraway Tree Had a Fantastic Reception
The movie The Magic Faraway Tree came out in the UK in early April and was a big hit during the Easter break. It earned almost $20 million there and over $7 million in Australia, where it continued to be popular even after the holidays due to strong audience interest.
Though the movie hasn’t been released in the United States yet, it’s already become a hit elsewhere. If American audiences react as positively as viewers abroad, Rebecca Ferguson could be starring in a successful new film series.
This fantasy adventure features Andrew Garfield (known from The Amazing Spider-Man) and Claire Foy (The Crown) as Tim and Polly Thompson, a couple of exhausted parents longing for a simpler life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. After Polly loses her job, they decide to move their family to a peaceful, secluded area in the countryside.
The film has been well-received by critics, earning a 91% approval rating based on 35 reviews. Reviewers particularly enjoyed its charming characters, lighthearted comedy, and relevant theme of disconnecting from technology.
The Magic Faraway Tree debuts in theaters on Aug. 21.
