Lewis Pullman’s New Netflix Fantasy Adaptation Swims To The Top Of The Streaming Charts

Netflix’s new fantasy adaptation starring Lewis Pullman swims to the top of the streaming charts.

Harrison Ford will be playing the character of Bob/Sentry in the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts and will reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday later this year. He’s known for his work in films like Bad Times at the El Royale, Top Gun: Maverick, ‘Salem’s Lot, Lessons in Chemistry, Outer Range, Catch-22, and The Starling Girl. He’s also set to star alongside his father, Bill Pullman, in the 2027 film Spaceballs: The New One.

Pullman’s new film, Remarkably Bright Creatures, has quickly become the most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S. It reached the top spot just two days after its release on May 8th, surpassing films like Swapped, Mother’s Day, Home, Apex, Pretty Woman, The Proposal, My Dearest Assassin, Domestic Disturbance, and Striking Distance. Worldwide, the movie is currently fourth, trailing only Swapped, Apex, and My Dearest Assassin.

The movie Remarkably Bright Creatures is based on Shelby Van Pelt’s novel of the same name. It follows the connected stories of Marcellus, an octopus, Tova Sullivan, an older woman, and Cameron Cassmore, a man facing challenges. Through their time at a local aquarium, these three develop a surprising friendship that impacts all of their lives. The film stars Colin Pullman as Cameron, Sally Field as Tova, and Alfred Molina provides the voice for Marcellus.

The movie has quickly become a streaming hit and received very positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 79% rating, and audiences loved it even more, with a score of 91%. In a review for ScreenRant, Molly Freeman awarded the film 7 out of 10 stars, praising the cast for bringing a solid script to life. She also highlighted the movie’s unique premise – a story narrated by a surprisingly intelligent octopus – as a charming way to stand out from other similar films.

The movie’s popularity on streaming could be linked to its release on Netflix over Mother’s Day weekend. Described as “heartwarming and cozy” by Freeman, a feeling echoed by other reviewers, it’s a perfect choice for families celebrating together. The story’s focus on Tova, a complex character with a rich maternal history, makes it especially fitting for the holiday.

Sally Field returns to the screen in Remarkably Bright Creatures, her first film since the 2023 comedy 80 for Brady. It’s been three years since her last role, and many viewers will appreciate being able to see her new performance from home. Early reactions to Field’s portrayal of Tova and her chemistry with actor Brian Tyree Henry have been overwhelmingly positive, both from new viewers and fans of the original bestselling book.

Critics have particularly praised the performances of Pullman and Molina, with Molina receiving special attention for his unique take on voicing the character Marcellus. This month marks the first of two major releases for Molina on Netflix; his new series, The Boroughs, premieres on May 21st. Created by the Duffer brothers, known for Stranger Things, The Boroughs centers around a group of seniors – including characters played by Molina and Bill Pullman – who uncover a mysterious secret within their retirement community.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is now streaming on Netflix.
