5 Forgotten R-Rated Action Movies That Are Perfect From Start to Finish

I think a lot of people assume R-rated movies are just about violence and shocking content, and honestly, I used to think that too. But I’ve realized it’s not always the case. Some of the best R-rated films are genuinely amazing, with fantastic actors and really strong stories that keep you hooked from start to finish.

Movies like The Guest and Hardcore Henry deal with serious and sometimes disturbing themes, but they offer more than just cheap thrills. The R-rating gives filmmakers the freedom to tell emotionally powerful and truly creative stories, making these films compelling from start to finish.

The Guest Follows A Man on the Run

Adam Wingard’s film, The Guest, centers on the Peterson family and their meeting with David (Dan Stevens), a soldier who says he was close to their deceased son. While the family initially welcomes him, they soon discover David is a dangerous individual as a string of mysterious deaths begin to occur.

From the very start, The Guest is a relentless thrill ride. David is constantly in motion, fighting and fleeing as he tries to hide who he really is. The movie is packed with action that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but it also has heart, largely due to David’s connection with young Luke Peterson.

Upgrade Is A Sci-Fi Thriller

In the sci-fi thriller Upgrade, Logan Marshall-Green plays Grey Trace, a man who dislikes technology but receives a chip implant in 2046 that transforms him into a deadly fighter. After a violent attack leaves his wife dead and him paralyzed, Trace seeks revenge, aided by STEM – a cutting-edge brain implant that’s gone haywire and amplifies his anger.

Leigh Whannell’s Upgrade is a thrilling ride full of unexpected twists. The script is clever and funny, playfully using familiar science fiction ideas in a way that makes you think. That’s what good sci-fi does! Plus, it’s packed with non-stop action, making it a must-see movie.

Dredd Brings Unique Lore to the Table

The 2012 film Dredd stars Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, a law enforcer working in the futuristic, crime-ridden Mega-City One. With around 20,000 crimes happening daily, Judges are authorized to deliver immediate justice when needed. Alongside Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), Dredd attempts to restore order to a massive 200-story apartment complex, facing opposition from the powerful drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey).

The movie Dredd takes inspiration from the Judge Dredd comic series and expands on its rich backstory. This makes it exciting for both longtime fans and newcomers, who will be immediately immersed in a detailed and original world. Even if you don’t know the comics, Dredd is a fast-paced, thrilling sci-fi experience packed with intense chases, futuristic weapons, and a fantastic industrial soundtrack.

Hardcore Henry Is Almost Like A Video Game

I was completely blown away by Hardcore Henry! It starts with this guy, Henry, waking up in a lab – but he’s lost his memory and, even stranger, his arms and legs have been replaced with robotic parts. Before he knows it, he’s thrown right into the middle of a huge fight against a bunch of mercenaries working for this seriously powerful and dangerous criminal who can move things with his mind. Honestly, that’s just the start of the crazy adventure!

Ilya Naishuller’s Hardcore Henry is a unique movie experience, filmed entirely from the main character’s point of view. Henry doesn’t speak throughout the film, and combined with the non-stop action, this makes the viewer feel like they are Henry, constantly on the run and in the middle of the action for ninety minutes.

Man on Fire Is Both Emotional & Thrilling

In the film Man on Fire, Denzel Washington plays John W. Creasy, a troubled ex-CIA operative and Marine who takes a job protecting Pita (Dakota Fanning), the daughter of a rich businessman in Mexico. The movie centers on the strong bond Creasy forms with Pita and his desperate fight to rescue her when she’s kidnapped.

The film delivers thrilling chases and intense shootouts involving crooked agents, kidnappers, and the main character, Creasy. What really stands out, though, is the touching friendship that develops between Creasy and a young girl named Pita. Dakota Fanning and Denzel Washington’s performances are key to this, as they beautifully portray their connection, making it the heart of the movie.
