Over its eleven seasons, the show featured many violent scenes that shocked audiences and sparked debate about how it was allowed to be broadcast. Some viewers even protested the graphic nature of particularly gruesome moments, like Glenn’s death at the hands of Negan in the Season 7 premiere. Surprisingly, one episode that wasn’t even exceptionally violent almost didn’t air on AMC.
According to Michael Cudlitz, who played Abraham Ford, Season 5, Episode 5, titled “Self-Help,” heavily focused on his character and included flashbacks to the tragic day he lost his family. Cudlitz tweeted the day before the episode aired in 2014 that the network, AMC, almost didn’t allow it to air, playfully suggesting he might lose his job with the hashtag “#imightgetfired.”
Why Did AMC Almost Ban ‘Self-Help’ on The Walking Dead?
Cudlitz didn’t share any further details about why the episode almost didn’t air, and neither AMC nor anyone else involved in the show explained his comment. So, it’s best to view his statement as speculation. However, that hasn’t stopped people from trying to figure out what he meant.
Throughout its run, The Walking Dead has generally toned down its violence, strong language, and sexual content compared to the original comic book series. This is largely because AMC, as a basic cable channel, has stricter advertising standards than premium channels like HBO or Showtime. Advertisers could withdraw funding if the content was too graphic, so while violence wasn’t a major concern, swearing and nudity were consistently minimized.
Okay, let’s talk about that scene with Abraham and Rosita in “Self-Help.” Honestly, it felt a little longer than your typical intimate moment on The Walking Dead – we were right in the middle of things, not just the build-up or aftermath. I was actually surprised it made the final cut! It suggests either AMC decided to allow it, or that wasn’t the issue they were focused on when reviewing the episode.
Abraham’s Original Backstory Was Altered for Television
The episode left out a particularly disturbing scene from the original comic book. In the comics, Abraham’s wife and daughter were victims of a horrific sexual assault while he was away gathering supplies. Their son was forced to witness the attack. Upon his return, Abraham brutally killed everyone responsible, including committing an exceptionally violent act against one of the attackers.
The TV show made a few minor changes to Abraham’s story, but the core message remains the same: Abraham killed the four men who assaulted his wife, despite her being the only survivor to experience such violence. The show avoids showing the most graphic details of the attack.
If the show was directly copying the source material, AMC was justified in being worried. Many TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, 13 Reasons Why, and Euphoria, have been criticized for showing sexual assault too graphically. Viewers don’t need to see violent acts to understand that they’ve occurred and why they are so damaging.
Some argue that The Walking Dead and AMC avoided difficult topics to avoid alienating viewers. However, these subjects – things you’d expect to see in a world without laws or government – shouldn’t be ignored simply because they’re uncomfortable. The show could have been very different if it had aired on a more daring network like HBO.
The Walking Dead is available to stream on AMC.
