Amazon Prime Video’s Countdown, released in 2025, quickly became a standout crime thriller. The show’s concept felt similar to 24, but with a clever twist in its meaning.
The TV show 24 aired on Fox from 2001 to 2010 and won 20 Emmy Awards over its 200+ episodes, even taking home the award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006 – beating out popular shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing. While Amazon Prime Video offers several action-packed series such as Reacher and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan that compare to 24, Countdown also builds its plot around the ticking-clock concept of time.
The new series Countdown stars well-known actors like Jensen Ackles (from Supernatural), Jessica Camacho (The Flash), and Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), who all deliver engaging performances. While critics haven’t praised the show, viewers seem to be enjoying it, as it quickly became popular on Amazon Prime Video after its release.
Countdown Is A Ticking Clock Thriller Surrounding A Terrorist Threat
Countdown’s Protagonists Bend The Rules To Prevent An Attack
Amazon Prime Video’s new show clearly takes inspiration from the action series 24, proving how impactful that show still is more than twenty years after it first aired. 24 was innovative for its time by telling its story in ‘real-time’ – each episode represented one hour within a single 24-hour period, and a season had 24 episodes.
Even though Countdown isn’t structured exactly like a typical action thriller about counterterrorism, it creates a similar feeling of urgency. Like those stories, it features heroes trying to stop a dangerous attack before time runs out. The music often includes a ticking clock sound to build suspense.
The story begins with the shocking murder of Homeland Security agent Robert Darden, committed by the Cartel. This leads to the creation of an unlikely task force, who suspect widespread corruption not only within Homeland Security, but also in other law enforcement agencies.
The murder investigation focuses on Borys Volchek, a former soldier from Belarus who arrived in Los Angeles, apparently seeking revenge for his brother’s death. The situation is extremely dangerous, as Volchek manages to smuggle in the materials needed to cause a disaster on the scale of Chernobyl.
Jensen Ackles’ Detective Meachum Has A Personal Ticking Clock
Meachum’s Brain Tumor Is A Countdown To His Death
Leading the team is detective Mark Meacham, a veteran with years of experience working undercover, both in prisons and infiltrating neo-Nazi groups. His colleagues see him as unpredictable, self-involved, and a bit of a risk-taker.
Recently, Detective Meachum received a life-threatening diagnosis of a severe brain tumor. This adds a deeper layer of meaning to the show Countdown; the ticking clock sound effect isn’t just building tension related to the terrorist threat in Los Angeles – it also represents the limited time Meachum has left.
Mark Meachum has a history of making poor decisions, often dealing with difficult emotions by throwing himself into work and punishing himself. Facing his own mortality, and with everything on the line, he’s now uniquely positioned to confront a terrible danger.
| Show | Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
| Countdown (After 1 season) | 35% | 63% |
| 24 (After 9 seasons) | 87% | 87% |
Instead of following the rules and risking his career, Meachum is now free to do whatever it takes to stop Volchek. This raises a tense question: will Volchek’s plan explode first, or will Meachum succumb to his illness?
Meachum isn’t the only member of the task force struggling with personal problems. The first episode introduces DEA agent Amber Oliveras, who is battling a drug addiction and quickly begins to contemplate relapsing.
The show 24 heightened the tension of each episode by unfolding events in real time over a full 24-hour period. Meanwhile, Countdown’s title works on two levels: it refers to both a ticking time bomb and the emotional breakdown of its main characters.
Why Countdown Was Cancelled After Season 1
The Show’s Performance Did Not Meet The Streamer’s Expectations
Although Countdown started strong and did well on Prime Video, it ultimately didn’t meet Amazon’s expectations for a series they wanted to continue investing in. While the show was a top 10 hit in the US for several weeks, it didn’t gain much traction with viewers in other countries.
Compared to other popular crime thrillers on Prime Video, such as Reacher, Bosch, and Jack Ryan, Countdown didn’t receive as much positive attention from critics. Currently, it has a low score of 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Prime Video has a strong track record with popular and well-received crime thrillers. Because of this, the streaming service decided not to move forward with a second season of Countdown, as it didn’t seem like a worthwhile investment.
