The team behind The Expanse is working on a new space opera for Prime Video, and it has a potential edge over their previous show. While The Expanse was fantastic, it didn’t have the chance to fully adapt the entire book series and it’s now unlikely to get a continuation. This new project could potentially tell a complete story.
Over six seasons, The Expanse became one of the most highly regarded science fiction adaptations in recent years. The show faced an early challenge when Syfy canceled it after just three seasons, but it was thankfully rescued and continued for another three seasons on Prime Video.
The team behind the popular sci-fi series on Prime Video is now developing a new show based on The Captive’s War, a book series by the same authors as The Expanse – Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Because the creators of The Expanse are involved, the adaptation of The Captive’s War looks very promising, and many believe it has the potential to be even more successful than its predecessor.
Unlike The Expanse, Prime Video’s Capitve’s War Only Has To Adapt 3 Books
Currently, The Captive’s War is envisioned as a trilogy, with two books – The Mercy of Gods and The Faith of Beasts – already published, along with a short story called Livesuit. In contrast, The Expanse began as a nine-book series with additional short stories, making it a much larger and longer science fiction story.
Because the book series is so long, the Prime Video show The Expanse couldn’t adapt every part of the story.
In today’s TV landscape, where many shows don’t last more than a couple of seasons, The Expanse did well to run for six seasons. However, even with its longevity, the show wasn’t able to adapt the entire story from the books it was based on.
With only three books in the Captive’s War series, the Prime Video show should be able to tell the complete story in three or four seasons. This is different from The Expanse, as The Captive’s War appears much more likely to adapt the entire book series without having to cut out important plotlines.
The new adaptation of The Captive’s War brings back many of the talented people who made The Expanse a success. Naren Shankar returns as showrunner, and the original authors of both The Expanse and The Captive’s War, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, are writing for the show as well.
With two books and a novella already available, the creators of the show have enough material to confidently produce two or three seasons. In fact, the authors, Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, are expected to finish the third book in the series before the show runs out of source material. This means Prime Video’s The Captive’s War won’t have to invent new storylines like Game of Thrones did, and can stay true to the books.
A major challenge with adapting the later books of The Expanse was the large time skip. To accurately portray those events on screen, the show would have needed to either replace actors or heavily age the current cast. This presented considerable creative and production difficulties, ultimately leading to the decision to end the series after six seasons.
One of the strengths of The Captive’s War is its straightforward timeline and relatively short length – just three parts. Unlike The Expanse, it’s also a more intimate and character-focused story, making it well-suited for television adaptation.
Given all the positive momentum surrounding The Captive’s War, many believe it has the potential to be just as popular as, or even surpass, The Expanse on Prime Video.
