Kurt Russell has shared an update on whether fans can expect another movie in his popular Netflix Christmas series, The Christmas Chronicles.

Kurt Russell recently told MovieWeb that while he enjoyed making both Christmas Chronicles films, he doubts Netflix will make a third one. He thinks the decision comes down to what Netflix’s data suggests about viewership and demand.

He explained that their success with algorithms quickly grew their audience with both of their initial projects. Now, Netflix probably doesn’t believe another film will significantly increase their viewership. That’s just the tough truth about streaming today, and Russell added that he’s unsure if they’ll make another one.

After you’ve already reached a large audience, it’s hard to justify the potential gains from a third one – that’s just how things work with streaming shows. Despite the franchise seemingly ending after only two movies, Russell spoke highly of The Christmas Chronicles and the entire experience of making it. He especially enjoyed working with director Chris Columbus, famous for films like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter movies.

Russell loved playing Santa Claus, especially because Christmas was so important growing up. His father used to dress as Santa, and taking the role in The Christmas Chronicles was Russell’s way of honoring that tradition and his dad.

I really enjoyed that role, and I especially loved working with Chris Columbus. I was proud of how the movies turned out – both of them! I felt very connected to the character and the whole experience. Playing Santa Claus was particularly meaningful to me because it was such a cherished part of my childhood and family traditions. My dad was an amazing Santa, and I wanted to honor that memory when taking on the role for Netflix.

In the first Christmas Chronicles film, a brother and sister named Kate and Teddy secretly climb into Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. Their impulsive act causes a crash, and they end up teaming up with Santa to fix things and save Christmas before it’s too late.

The movie features a cast including Darby Camp, Judah Lewis, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Oliver Hudson, Lamorne Morris, Martin Roach, Vella Lovell, Tony Nappo, Steven van Zandt, Jeff Teravainen, and Goldie Hawn, who is Kurt Russell’s partner of 43 years.

Kurt Russell, Goldie Hawn, and many of the original cast reprised their roles in The Christmas Chronicles 2, which came out two years later. This time, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Kate must work together to protect Christmas when a disgruntled former elf threatens to destroy the North Pole.

Critics generally had positive, though sometimes mixed, reactions to both The Christmas Chronicles and The Christmas Chronicles 2. The first film received a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second earned a 66%.

Six years have passed since the second movie came out, and Netflix still hasn’t approved a third Christmas Chronicles film. This suggests Russell’s prediction is probably right.

Following the Christmas Chronicles films, the actor took on roles in projects such as F9, the Marvel series What If…?, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (which just finished its second season), and Taylor Sheridan’s The Madison.
