Many game developers are responding to player nostalgia by updating classic games from the early 2000s with remakes and remasters. These updated versions let players revisit beloved experiences and recapture the joy of their childhood.
Many other great games from the 2000s haven’t been updated or remastered yet. Regardless of their quality, they all deserve a chance to be experienced with today’s technology.
Tony Hawk’s Underground Deserves a New Audience
The series has done well with updated versions of its older games. With the first four titles now remade, fans are hoping to see a remake of Tony Hawk’s Underground next.
With its cinematic story mode and open-world exploration—features new to the series—Underground represented a major evolution for the franchise. It’s a game that deserves to be discovered by today’s players, alongside the classic, arcade-style gameplay of the earlier titles.
Sonic Heroes is a Family Affair
This game features a team of heroes from the Sonic universe, divided into four groups, all working to stop Dr. Eggman. Players need to strategically switch between characters with unique abilities and limitations to overcome challenges and complete each level.
The team-based gameplay was both enjoyable and cleverly showcased characters players didn’t know as well. A new version of the game could improve this by making the teams even more distinct and interesting. Plus, fans would get updated versions of the already fantastic levels and music.
Guitar Hero Continues to Rock
Guitar Hero was incredibly popular in the mid-2000s, but the series declined rapidly due to an oversaturation of games and strong competition from Rock Band. Now, after a long hiatus, it’s time to revive Guitar Hero by remaking the original, beloved titles.
The series might return with just one new game, or it could be re-released as a collection of remade classics, similar to what happened with Tony Hawk. Either way, this beloved rhythm game is set to be playable on today’s consoles.
Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex Should be Next
The first three Crash Bandicoot games, plus Crash Team Racing, were successfully updated for today’s consoles, bringing the character back into popularity. If Activision keeps re-releasing classic titles – and they absolutely should – Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex would be the perfect next choice.
This new Crash game is the first to be released on multiple platforms and introduces Crunch Bandicoot. It captures everything fans loved about the original Crash trilogy, and those classic elements deserve to be updated for a new generation of players.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is a Treasure Trove of Greatness
As a huge fan, I’ve been thinking… if Naughty Dog ever decided to remake the very first Uncharted game, it would be incredible! That original adventure with Nathan Drake hunting for El Dorado was packed with all the amazing action and huge set pieces that made me fall in love with the series in the first place.
The story of Nathan Drake concluded with Uncharted 4, and no new games have been released since The Lost Legacy. Remaking the first games would be a great way to continue the series without needing to create an entirely new narrative.
Infamous Would Electrify the Modern Audience
The original Infamous was an enjoyable superhero game featuring exciting combat powered by unique abilities. What set it apart was its Karma system, which altered the storyline based on whether the player made good or evil choices, offering a different experience than many other superhero titles.
A remake could really showcase everything that made the original game great, updating the visuals to meet today’s standards. Plus, it would be a perfect opportunity to bring back Cole MacGrath, a fan-favorite hero from the PlayStation 3 era.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Needs More Than a Remaster
For a long time, Nintendo fans have been hoping for new Zelda games, but often end up with updated versions of older titles. Recently, there’s been talk of a remake for Ocarina of Time, which is a fantastic game. However, Twilight Princess is equally deserving of a remake as well.
Okay, the HD version looks fantastic, but honestly? A complete 4K overhaul of both Hyrule and the Twilight Realm from Twilight Princess would be absolutely mind-blowing. That game is one of Link’s best adventures, and it deserves to look its absolute best!
Sly 2: Band of Thieves Will Steal Your Heart
Sly Cooper was a popular PlayStation character in the 2000s, but hasn’t had a new game in a long time. The original three games, especially the second one, would be great to remake for modern consoles.
Sly 2: Band of Thieves is a really enjoyable game with exciting platforming and stealth challenges. Its bright, cartoon style is instantly appealing, and it would be fantastic to play on today’s PlayStation consoles.
Super Mario Sunshine Should Shine Again
I absolutely love Super Mario Sunshine! It was such a different Mario game when it first came out, and honestly, that’s what makes it so great. Looking back, it really paved the way for some of the wilder Mario games we’ve seen since then.
Bringing Sunshine into the current Mario series would be a great fit. Updating the game with modern graphics and technology could make it look and play better than ever, attracting a new generation of players.
Halo 2 is Most Likely Coming Next
The Halo series is a hugely important and groundbreaking first-person shooter, and now a new generation of players will get to experience Master Chief’s original mission with the release of Halo: Combat Evolved on multiple platforms. This updated version is expected to be very popular, leading many to wonder if Halo 2 will also receive a remake.
Given how incredibly popular Halo 2 was when it first came out, a remake today would be a huge hit. The online multiplayer, in particular, would be amazing. Many popular shooting games were influenced by Halo, so it feels like the series is perfectly positioned to make a big return.
