Jason Statham’s R-Rated Action Hit That Rebooted A 70s Classic Is Officially Streaming

Fans can now experience Jason Statham’s action-packed film, The Mechanic, in a new way.

The Mechanic is an action-packed thriller released in 2011. It’s a remake of a popular movie from the 1970s with the same title. Directed by Simon West, this version updates the original 1972 film, which starred Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland. Though the two films aren’t identical, they share a similar story: both center around a skilled hitman who expertly disguises murders as accidents.

This new version of the story centers around Arthur Bishop, played by Jason Statham, a skilled mechanic who is secretly a top hitman. He keeps his professional and personal lives completely separate, but that changes when a job goes badly. After his mentor and friend is murdered, Bishop unexpectedly finds himself responsible for his son and ultimately decides to teach him the tricks of the trade.

As of May 1st, you can now stream the 2011 remake of The Mechanic on Paramount+. This action film stars Jason Statham, along with Donald Sutherland, Ben Foster, and Mini Anden, and features a story about a skilled hitman who takes on an apprentice.

The new series, The Mechanic, launches on Paramount+ during a period of big changes for its parent company, Paramount Skydance. The company recently agreed to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, but this deal is facing opposition from some in the entertainment industry. Concerns are that the merger could mean fewer movies in theaters and more content exclusively on the streaming service.

Paramount and Warner Bros. reached an agreement after a competitive bidding process that initially involved Netflix. Netflix had made a preliminary deal with the studio, but Paramount was determined to secure the arrangement and continued negotiating. Ultimately, Netflix withdrew, explaining that exceeding their financial limit for the deal with Warner Bros. Discovery wouldn’t be a sound investment.

Statham’s reboot of The Mechanic is now available to stream on Paramount+.
