‘I Didn’t Want To Do It.’ Kid Cudi Gets Real About What It Was Like Being On The Stand To Testify At Diddy’s Trial

As a dedicated cinema-goer and fervent fan of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ music, I found myself captivated by recent events unfolding in the courtroom. During his sex-trafficking trial, it was a surreal experience to witness not only Diddy himself but also various notable celebrities, including his ex Cassie Ventura and fellow hip-hop legend Kid Cudi, testify on behalf of the prosecution.

Intriguingly, Cassie shared details about their past relationship, while Kid Cudi provided insight into two alleged situations involving Diddy. Now, several months after that high-profile legal matter, Kid Cudi is shedding light on his courtroom experience and recounting the unique dynamic of being in close proximity to Diddy himself.

In May 2025, Scott Mescudi, also known as Kid Cudi, was summoned to testify against Sean Combs. Previously, Mescudi had a short romantic involvement with Cassie. It’s alleged that because of this, he faced two separate incidents which some claim were instigated by Combs. Speaking to CBS Mornings (as reported by X), Mescudi opened up about his court experience, admitting it wasn’t an easy journey for him.

It was really hard. I didn’t want to do it. I got subpoenaed.

Between 2007 and 2018, Cassie and Diddy had an on-again, off-again relationship. In 2011, there was a brief period when Cassie got together with Kid Cudi. This is also the year that it’s said Kid Cudi’s home was broken into, following a heated argument between him and Diddy. Another incident happened in early 2012, where a car outside Kid Cudi’s house was reportedly set on fire, which some believe was an act of arson. Kid Cudi provided testimony related to both incidents during court proceedings.

While the artist known for “Day ‘n’ Nite” initially seemed reluctant to testify, he expressed that his main motivation was to be supportive of Cassie and assist her. During a CBS interview, Cudi spoke candidly about his shared courtroom experience with Combs. He elaborated on why the situation felt odd but also revealed that he has no lingering regrets about his time in court.

It felt strange since it had been quite some time since I last encountered him. There were a few instances where our eyes met. Regardless of how things appeared, I’m confident I made the correct decision, and that is what truly counts.

A short while later, Scott Mescudi’s testimony drew criticism from rapper Kanye West, who made a social media post expressing regret that Cudi had testified against Diddy. West argued that African Americans should not be bound by the justice system of white-run institutions. Previously, West had expressed similar sentiments and compared himself to Diddy. Additionally, Ye had already called Diddy while he was in prison to express solidarity during his legal struggles.

Sean Combs, previously known as Puff Daddy, has been found guilty of transporting individuals for prostitution and is now facing possible prison time. He was acquitted of charges related to sex-trafficking, racketeering, and other serious offenses like RICO. As a result, he’s currently being detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn before his sentencing on October 3rd. Meanwhile, Kid Cudi appears to have moved on after testifying in this case.
