Eric Stonestreet played Cameron Tucker on for eleven seasons, earning two Emmy Awards and becoming a beloved TV character. He’s even become popular with younger generations – his character’s funny and confident personality has turned into popular memes and reaction images on social media.
It seems like there have been more comedies on TV recently, which is great. I’m hoping to be part of one of those shows someday. I actually asked my team – my agents and managers – to focus on getting me roles in Los Angeles, so I could move back from Missouri and work on a show there.
Eric Stonestreet believes the future looks promising for traditional half-hour sitcoms, especially after the success of Happy’s Place. He’s thrilled that both the show and Universal Television are getting recognition, calling it “crazy” given how rare this format has become. While once standard, this style of sitcom is now fading, but it may be making a comeback.
Stonestreet noted that creating a comedy feels risky now, as there are fewer comedy shows on television than usual. With fewer half-hour shows being made overall, he hopes NBC Universal will lead the way in bringing comedies back to TV and finding ways to get people watching, whether in their living rooms or on streaming platforms.
Eric Stonestreet Explains How Television Has Changed Since Modern Family
It’s clear that television has become much more competitive since the success of Modern Family. During its prime, the show averaged almost 13 million viewers per season, and even later on, it still consistently drew around 6 million. These days, it’s hard for traditional network sitcoms to reach those kinds of numbers.
Eric Stonestreet noted that when Modern Family first aired, it had incredibly high ratings. He explained that today, even a hit show gets about a quarter of the viewers Modern Family did, but that doesn’t mean current shows are worse. It simply reflects how much television has changed, with viewers now having many more ways to watch.
Even the popular show Happy’s Place is changing how it releases episodes. New episodes usually air on NBC on Fridays at a set time, and then become available to stream on Peacock the next day. Viewers who only stream will be able to catch up on the current season, but will probably have to wait a long time for Season 2. Good news though – Season 3 is confirmed and is expected to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027.
The final episode of Happy’s Place Season 2 will air on NBC this Friday, April 24th, and will be available to stream on Peacock the following day. You can watch all seasons of Modern Family on Hulu and Disney+.
