House of the Dragon is heating up ahead of season 3.
HBO’s House of the Dragon is a prequel to the hugely popular series Game of Thrones, taking place almost 200 years before the original show. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and focuses on the Targaryen family, their power struggles, and the fight for the throne. Another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set about 100 years after the events of House of the Dragon.
HBO has released a new image of Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen walking through what appears to be an underground tunnel, and fans believe this might indicate a significant departure from the source material. Viewers are now wondering why both Helaena and Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke) are traveling through this tunnel system, with many suggesting they might be headed to see Dreamfyre.
Dreamfyre is a graceful, light blue dragon considered one of the oldest and most stunning of her time in the era depicted by House of the Dragon. She was originally bonded with Princess Rhaena Targaryen, and later with Helaena. However, recent events suggest they might be running and hiding from Aemond (played by Ewan Mitchell), who is embarking on a reckless and dangerous journey in season 2.
After the death of her son, Jaehaerys, Helaena falls into a severe depression and stops flying her dragon, Dreamfyre. Therefore, if Helaena were to fly Dreamfyre again, it would be a significant departure from her established character and the source material. The show has already made changes to the books – for example, by portraying Alicent and Rhaenyra as childhood friends – suggesting that a visit with Dreamfyre isn’t entirely out of the question.
As of today, HBO hasn’t announced an official release date for season 3 of House of the Dragon. However, they’ve started to hint at an upcoming announcement by sharing some early images, including one of Aemond sporting his eye patch. The show is currently expected to return in June 2026, giving fans a hopeful sign after a two-year gap between seasons.
