As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be thrilled by the latest addition to the comic book genre-dominated pop culture scene, spearheaded by none other than DC co-CEO James Gunn. His innovative approach has given birth to the new DC Universe (DCU), and the first batch of projects, titled “Gods and Monsters,” promises an exciting journey.
The grand curtain rose with the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of everyone’s favorite superhero, Superman. Now, amidst the flurry of discussions about the DCU, Gunn has addressed a fan’s query concerning Krypto’s name – and his response is quite compelling.
In cinemas, James Gunn’s Superman movie was highly successful and laid groundwork for future DC films. The film introduced a live-action Krypto character, who many believe stole the show in the blockbuster. However, on Threads forum, a fan expressed dissatisfaction with the name of the superpowered dog, arguing:
Superman’s dog being named ‘Krypto’ is just bad writing. It’s like naming your dog ‘Eartho’.
It’s clear to comic book enthusiasts that Krypto, not the Kryptonian dog, was named by someone other than James Gunn in the comics. Krypto is well-established in various media, some of which can be streamed with an HBO Max subscription. Therefore, it wasn’t James Gunn who made this naming decision for the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker. However, that didn’t prevent him from engaging in a discussion about the topic online with a specific moviegoer.
James Gunn frequently dispels rumors on the internet and frequently engages with fans regarding his works. As such, when he came across discussions about the naming of Krypto, he voiced his support for the decision made by DC back in 1955 in his own words.
If I were stranded on a distant planet, my dog might be called “Eartho,” as he would be the only reminder I have left of my home world.
Instead of sounding cliche, Krypto’s name was a homage to the doomed planet where Superman and his cousin Supergirl originated. They, along with Krypto, are among the rare survivors from that world. Naming the superpowered dog with such significance seems like an appropriate tribute to all the lives lost when the planet was destroyed by explosion.

The fan’s critique of a character’s name, established decades ago, demonstrates some audacity. It’s hard to fathom how they might be feeling now that James Gunn has addressed their comment directly. However, it’s worth noting that Krypto in the Superman series was named after Gunn’s actual pet dog, establishing a strong personal link between him and the canine character.
Fortunately for crypto fans, it appears Krypto is slated to make a comeback in the growing DCU more quickly than later. His brief appearance as Supergirl’s pet in “Superman” hinted that he was actually her dog, suggesting he will also feature in Milly Alcock’s upcoming blockbuster. I can’t wait to see if his behavior changes now that he is reunited with his true master.
Currently, Superman can be seen on the big screen, while Supergirl is anticipated to join him starting June 26 of the following year, which is part of the 2026 film schedule.
