Do you enjoy watching series such as NCIS, JAG, and Quantum Leap? If so, credit Donald P. Bellisario for their creation since he produced these popular shows from the 1980s to early 2000s. Interestingly, NCIS is set to start its 23rd season in the fall of 2025, which speaks to its enduring popularity. Recently, several actors from these series attended a gathering to celebrate Bellisario’s 90th birthday, including Scott Bakula, who playfully teased him during his speech at the party.
JAG actress Catherine Bell shared a snippet of the speech Bakula gave to the attendees on her Instagram Stories. The actor, who starred as Sam Beckett in the original Quantum Leap, amusingly busted Bellisario’s chops with these words:
Tonight, we gather because Donald Paul Bellisario has an unyielding spirit and a passionate nature. However, it’s his fighting spirit that takes center stage. Born in Cokeburg, Pennsylvania, a mining town near Pittsburgh, in 1935, he was compelled to wear knee socks and knickerbockers to school every day by his family. In essence, they could have easily attached a “Kick Me” sign on his back, given the circumstances.
In this version, I aimed to maintain the original meaning while making the language more conversational and easier to read.
It’s not surprising at all that Donald Bellisario became a successful TV producer, given his struggles as a child in the 1940s. After all, this is a celebration, so some good-natured teasing is to be expected. Since Scott Bakula (known for Star Trek: Enterprise) and Bellisario are old friends, it’s only natural that he would share such a story about him. Everyone understands it comes from a friendly place.
At Donald Bellisario’s birthday party, apart from Scott Bakula and Catherine Bell (who portrayed Sarah MacKenzie in all but one season of JAG, as well as three episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles), several other notable attendees were Michael Weatherly, Cote de Pablo, Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, Gary Cole, and Diona Reasonover from NCIS. Bell also got together with her JAG costars Patrick Labyorteaux, Karri Turner, and Steven Culp at the party, with Bell noting in a post that she hadn’t seen Labyorteaux and Turner in approximately 20 years. It’s worth mentioning that Bakula is also part of the NCIS family due to his role as Dwayne Pride on NCIS: New Orleans, although Bellisario wasn’t involved in the creation of that spinoff.
Here’s a fun way to say it:
“Congratulations on your 90th birthday, Mr. Bellisario! May there be many more joyous occasions ahead for you! If you fancy revisiting the original Quantum Leap, you can stream it for free on Roku. Or, if you’ve got a Paramount+ subscription, take a look at JAG and all the NCIS shows. In a few weeks, they will also be featuring the platform-exclusive NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
