Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2! The latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again brilliantly demonstrates why the original Daredevil series is still considered the best live-action superhero show. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been experimenting with new content on Disney+ during the Multiverse Saga. This is a big shift from the past, when Marvel releases were primarily movies shown in theaters, before the creation of TV shows specifically for the Disney+ streaming service.
The recent surge of Marvel TV shows connected to the Multiverse Saga hasn’t been a complete success. Secret Invasion, initially promising with its story of shape-shifting Skrulls infiltrating Earth and Nick Fury’s attempt to thwart them, ultimately disappointed many viewers and is considered one of the MCU’s weaker projects.
Despite early doubts, Marvel Studios has had significant success with shows on its streaming platform. Series like Loki and WandaVision have become critically acclaimed, ranking among the best live-action superhero shows ever made, and competing with established DC shows such as The Flash, Watchmen, Smallville, and The Penguin. They’ve also faced competition from some of Netflix’s The Defenders Saga shows, which were initially considered connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Over time, and especially with the recent changes to the Daredevil: Born Again series, Marvel has officially recognized the Netflix Marvel shows as part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again is expected to be a top-tier Disney+ superhero show, competing with series like Loki and WandaVision. However, when it comes to gritty, street-level superhero stories, the original Netflix Daredevil remains the best.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Pays Homage To The Netflix Show
The fifth episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is a clear homage to the original Daredevil series on Netflix. The flashback scenes featuring characters like Foggy, Matt, Fisk, Vanessa, Wesley, and Buck intentionally mimic the look and feel of Daredevil season 1, using similar character designs, lighting, and even the screen’s aspect ratio to create a sense of nostalgia.
Many Marvel fans have criticized the newer Disney+ series for looking less visually exciting than Netflix’s Daredevil. Seeing both styles in the same episode really highlights this difference – the Daredevil: Born Again flashbacks have a special, gritty feel that the current show just doesn’t quite capture.
Why Netflix’s Daredevil Is The Best Live-Action Superhero Series
So far, the story and characters in Daredevil: Born Again season 2 are as good as the original series. However, the original Daredevil on Netflix is still the stronger show overall, thanks to its stylish visuals and the fantastic performance of Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson.
The recent flashback appearance of Foggy Nelson in episode 5 highlights what’s missing from the new Daredevil: Born Again series: the enjoyable and meaningful relationship between Foggy and Matt Murdock. It’s a reminder of the emotional core that made the original Daredevil series so strong. In fact, when compared to the new Disney+ show, the original Netflix Daredevil stands out as one of the best live-action superhero series ever made.
For three seasons, the show consistently delivered high quality, earning a remarkable 92% critics’ score and 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It stood out with its stunning visuals, incredibly realistic fight choreography, and complex characters who grappled with difficult moral questions. Each season also kept viewers guessing with unexpected twists and turns, making it a truly exceptional multi-season series.
