Arnold Schwarzenegger’s $261M Flop Finds Resurgence on Streaming

The latest installment in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s famous sci-fi series is currently popular on streaming services. Despite not performing well in theaters, the 2019 film is gaining viewers online.

Arnold Schwarzenegger-led Terminator: Dark Fate continues streaming success

According to data from Flix Patrol on April 15, 2026, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator: Dark Fate is currently the 8th most popular title on Paramount+ in the United States. The horror film Primate is currently number one, followed by Top Gun: Maverick at number two and The Running Man at number three. This list shows what American viewers are watching the most.

As a huge fan of the Terminator franchise, I was a little surprised to see where Dark Fate is currently streaming. It actually hit theaters back in November 2019 – seven years ago now! While it’s a well-known property and a lot of people enjoyed it, it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. I remember hearing it cost around $185 million to make, but it only brought in a little over $261 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s a shame, really, because I thought it was a solid entry.

The movie made significantly more money at the box office than it cost to produce. Generally, a film needs to earn 2.5 times its production cost to break even. In the case of Terminator: Dark Fate, that meant needing to earn at least $462.5 million, but unfortunately, it didn’t reach that goal.

As a big sci-fi fan, I’ve been checking out what people are saying about this new movie, and it seems to be getting a pretty mixed response. Rotten Tomatoes shows critics giving it a 70% score, while regular moviegoers like you and me are much more positive with an 82% rating. The general consensus? Everyone loves the action – it’s seriously fast-paced and exciting – but a lot of people feel the story itself is a bit lacking.

Tim Miller, the director behind hits like Deadpool and Love, Death & Robots, helmed Terminator: Dark Fate. The screenplay was a collaborative effort led by writers James Cameron, Charles H. Eglee, Josh Friedman, David Goyer, and Justin Rhodes.

The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the T-800, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Mackenzie Davis as Grace, Natalia Reyes as Dani, and Gabriel Luna as the Rev-9, along with other talented actors.

Terminator: Dark Fate continued the story directly after James Cameron’s 1991 film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ignoring the other movies in the series. In a 2024 interview with Empire, Cameron explained why he believes the sequel didn’t perform well. He stated the issue wasn’t the quality of the film itself, but rather a lack of audience turnout. Cameron has repeatedly told director Tim Miller that he feels responsible, saying he essentially doomed the movie before it even began production.

Cameron explained that making a sequel was a huge challenge. The original film’s audience had largely aged or passed away, and there wasn’t much to attract a new generation of moviegoers. Despite this, they successfully created a follow-up film.
