NCIS Officially Confirms Gibbs’ Replacement

The show NCIS: Origins has confirmed a change in the storyline regarding Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell). In Season 2, Episode 15, the focus will shift to a personal case for Lala Dominguez (Mariel Molino). This season, Lala has been in a relationship with Manny Santiago (Miguel Gomez), and the episode, titled “Johnny B. Goode,” will show just how strong her feelings for him are.

This new series is the first to explore the early history of the NCIS universe, which began in 2003 with the original show starring Mark Harmon as Gibbs – a spin-off that itself started as an episode of JAG. Set in the 1990s, the prequel features a younger version of Gibbs, played by Stowell, and explores his complex relationship with fellow agent Lala Dominguez. However, the events of the episode “Johnny B. Goode” have dramatically altered everything.

NCIS: Origins Season 2 Replaces Gibbs With Manny In Episode 15

In the latest episode of NCIS: Origins, Agent Dominguez is determined to rescue her boyfriend, who is caught up with a dangerous street gang known as the 63rd Street Chacales. Her boyfriend, Manny, works as a driver for the gang leader, Flaco Navarro (played by Scotty Tovar), and because he knows too much about their operations, the gang considers him a liability and won’t let him leave alive.

Lala suggests to Manny that if Flaco is dealt with, Manny can finally start a new life. Through older Gibbs’s voiceover, we learn Manny is different from the others – he’s never taken a life. However, he ultimately decides to confess, revealing to Lala that he was responsible for the murder of Rico Luna in the episode “Johnny B. Goode.”

Lala finally discovers evidence to incriminate Flaco, which kicks off an investigation at NIS that ultimately leads them to Luna’s remains. However, Gibbs quickly realizes Lala isn’t telling the whole truth. He figures out she’s romantically involved with Flaco’s driver, revealing she’s deeply in love with Manny and willing to do anything to protect him.

Even though Gibbs manages to rescue Manny and gets him placed in witness protection with the help of FBI Agent Josephine Swanson, his nosiness disrupts Lala’s plans. Because Lala is in love with Manny but can’t be with him now that he’s in WITSEC, this earlier story now focuses on her journey, taking over the role Gibbs had in the previous stories.

The unresolved feelings between Lala and Gibbs have been a central part of the story for the female NIS agent. With Manny now gone, Lala and Santiago can no longer have a relationship, giving her a significant loss to cope with – a loss that fills the emotional space Gibbs once occupied in her life.

What Manny’s Story Means For Lala In NCIS: Origins Season 2

As the season nears its end, the latest case the NIS team is working on is going to really affect Lala’s storyline. We already saw in Episode 15 how her romance with Manny is adding a lot of emotional weight to things – it’s been great to see a different side of Dominguez, and honestly, Molino’s character is really shining through all of this. It’s making Lala’s arc so much more compelling.

In the first season of NCIS: Origins, Lala is deeply invested in helping Gibbs bring justice to Pedro Hernandez, who is accused of murdering his wife and daughter. Her strong dedication to the case, combined with Gibbs’ personal loss, puts her in danger, and she’s seriously injured in a car accident while on her way to his home.

Lala cares for Manny just as deeply as before, and despite the risks she took, Agent Dominguez is now struggling with heartbreak. Maybe if she creates some space between herself and Gibbs, they can build a genuine friendship, and Leroy can be a better support for Lala, like he was in the past.

This episode highlights Lala’s growth as a character. Previously, she would have dealt with challenges alone, but this time she seeks help from her informant, “Twitchy Tony” (Travis Hammer), showing she’s learning to rely on others when she needs support. The episode also features Lala driving for the first time since her accident, suggesting positive things to come for Dominguez.
