Mark Wahlberg’s new movie on Prime Video goes balls up.
Mark Wahlberg has enjoyed a diverse career in comedy, drama, and action films. He first gained widespread recognition for his role in the 1997 movie Boogie Nights, then transitioned to major action blockbusters like The Perfect Storm (2000) and Planet of the Apes (2001). He received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in The Departed (2006) and a Golden Globe nomination for his leading role in The Fighter (2010). Throughout the 2010s, he starred in popular comedies like The Other Guys (2010), Ted (2012), and Daddy’s Home (2015), as well as the Transformers films Age of Extinction (2014) and The Last Knight (2017).
The new action comedy Balls Up is now available on Prime Video, but it hasn’t been well-received by critics, earning a low score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Peter Farrelly, known for films like Dumb and Dumber and Green Book, and written by the team behind Deadpool, the movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a marketing executive who accidentally causes trouble at the World Cup in Brazil. He then has to figure out how to escape the country safely.
When Balls Up was released, critics gave it a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, this is based on only 11 reviews so far, meaning the score could change as more come in. Currently, there aren’t enough user ratings to calculate an audience score – fewer than 50 have been submitted.
The film stars Mark Wahlberg alongside a talented cast including Paul Walter Hauser (known for Black Bird), Sacha Baron Cohen (famous for Borat and The Trial of the Chicago 7), Benjamin Bratt (Law & Order), Luciano Szafir, Eva De Dominici, Daniela Melchior, Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live), Eric André (The Eric Andre Show), and Chelsey Crisp.
People have very mixed reactions to Balls Up. Some find it mildly funny, while others are completely drained by it. Critics either see it as forgettable background entertainment or feel the jokes fall flat. A few acknowledge it’s well-made, but ultimately lacks any real energy, leaving it in a strange place where it’s neither funny nor offensive.
The film has received harsh criticism, with many finding it to be an overly crude and chaotic comedy that doesn’t utilize its actors well. Critics point out that Mark Wahlberg seems out of place, although Paul Walter Hauser delivers a strong performance. Overall, the movie relies too heavily on stereotypes and feels like disposable streaming content, ultimately failing to make an impact.
