It’s been a while since we’ve seen the world of Harry Potter on screen, but that’s about to change. In 2021, news broke that J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter series would be continuing as a TV show after its success in movies. Now, with a trailer released by HBO Max, all attention is on the new series, even with some discussion about whether it’s necessary. Fans are busy debating who should be cast, and we already know at least one actor from the original Harry Potter films will be returning for the TV show.
It’s hard to picture anyone else playing these roles now. Just as Warwick Davis is Professor Flitwick, Toby Jones perfectly embodies Dobby. If HBO Max brings Davis on board for their Harry Potter series, hopefully they’ll also consider Jones to reprise his iconic voice role as Dobby the Elf.
I Can’t Imagine Anyone But Toby Jones Voicing Dobby In Harry Potter
As a huge movie fan, I always thought Dobby was so believable, even though he was created with CGI. Toby Jones really brought him to life! It wasn’t just the effects, though – Jones’ voice was incredible. He completely changed how he spoke to become Dobby, and that high-energy, frantic sound was perfect for the character. You could really feel Dobby’s nervousness through Jones’ voice work, honestly making you forget a human was even doing the voice!
Toby Jones didn’t just voice Dobby in the Harry Potter films – his dedication to the character heavily influenced Dobby’s design and animation. While recording his lines separately, Jones also performed on camera, allowing animators to study his facial expressions and body language. This helped them create a surprisingly nuanced and emotionally resonant character. Jones perfectly captured everything from Dobby’s insecurity to his fierce loyalty, delivering a truly exceptional performance. Many fans believe no one else could have brought Dobby to life quite like him, and are hoping he’ll reprise the role for HBO Max.
Now that Warwick Davis is back as Professor Flitwick, there’s a possibility that Matthew Lewis could return to the Harry Potter series if HBO Max decides to hire him. However, it depends on whether Lewis is interested in reprising his role. Dobby, a significant character from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, will be featured in the show’s second season. While the series isn’t expected to premiere until December 2026, Dobby could appear on screen as early as 2028 if production stays on track.
The Harry Potter Series Can’t Avoid Movie Comparisons, So Might As Well Lean Into Them
Some fans might be hesitant about seeing familiar faces from the Harry Potter films return, but it’s inevitable that the new show will be compared to the original movies. People naturally compare new versions of stories to the ones they already know and love, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change that. HBO Max understands this, which is why they’re bringing back Davis. However, the first trailer makes it clear that this show won’t simply be a copy of the films. It will have a distinctly different style, a change big enough to make it easy to accept Jones in the new series and move past any direct comparisons.
Honestly, bringing Dobby back wouldn’t be that difficult, at least compared to how they handled Warwick Davis’ return. If Toby Jones were to reprise the role, he wouldn’t even need to be on camera! They could recreate Dobby with CGI, or hopefully even some good old-fashioned puppetry. All they’d really need is his voice, and I think he could easily slip back into playing Dobby – or his socks, I guess! It’s just… Dobby wouldn’t feel right without Toby Jones. I really can’t picture anyone else bringing that character to life in the Harry Potter world.
