Ken Kwapis, the director of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, recently shared news about a possible third movie and whether it would follow the storyline of the book series.
The movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, based on Ann Brashares’ 2001 book, came out in 2005, and a second movie followed in 2008. Twelve years ago, there were talks about making a third film based on the book Sisterhood Everlasting, but the studio never confirmed it.
Director Miguel Arteta is sharing an update on the potential Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants reboot. He told ScreenRant that the project is currently stalled because the four main actresses—America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel—are all very busy with successful careers.
Kwapis said he’d love to work with the original four actresses again on another film. Although there aren’t any current plans, he’s optimistic that The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 will happen someday.
Last year marked the 20th anniversary of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and I’m thrilled it still connects with audiences, both young and old. While a third movie isn’t currently in the works—largely because the main actresses are all very busy with their careers—I’d love to reunite with them and make another film if the opportunity arises. I’m still hopeful it could happen.
The first movie follows a group of friends connected by a pair of jeans that miraculously fit them all perfectly. It’s based on the first book in Ann Brashares’ young adult series. The 2008 sequel adapts the fourth book, titled Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood.
The author also wrote three more books in the series: The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood, and Sisterhood Everlasting.
If a third Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie ever happens, director Ken Kwapis doesn’t think they’ll adapt another one of Ann Brashares’ books. He believes “it would have to be a completely new story” since the actresses are now older than the characters they played in the original novels.
I’m really intrigued by the creator’s idea for a potential continuation of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. He’s imagining what Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, and Lena would be like as parents, which is a fascinating thought! It sounds like he’s aiming for a similar vibe to the Malcolm in the Middle revival, where we see Malcolm all grown up with his own family – a daughter and a girlfriend. It’s a smart way to revisit these beloved characters and explore a new chapter in their lives.
Kwapis said it seems like a new script, separate from the original show, would be needed. However, he’s optimistic they can do it well, considering how much people love the characters.
A continuation of the story would need to be a completely new narrative, since the actors who played the characters are now older than the characters were at the end of the books. But that’s actually a good thing! It would be fantastic to revisit those characters, similar to how the recent revival of another series allowed us to see those characters as parents. It definitely needs a script that isn’t based on the original books, but the characters are so popular, I’m hopeful we can make it work.
As director Ken Kwapis pointed out, the actors from the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie have become major stars since then.
America Ferrera had already found success with the popular show Ugly Betty before taking on roles in projects like How to Train Your Dragon, Superstore, and the blockbuster Barbie. She received her first Academy Award nomination for her performance as Gloria in Barbie, where she delivered a particularly memorable and impactful speech.
Alexis Bledel was already a familiar face thanks to her role as Rory Gilmore in the hit show Gilmore Girls when The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants came out. She later returned to the role of Rory in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and went on to star in The Handmaid’s Tale.
Blake Lively has since starred in films like A Simple Favor, The Shallows, It Ends with Us, and another film also titled A Simple Favor, among others. Meanwhile, America Ferrera appeared in Django Unchained, House, Two and a Half Men, and the series Y: The Last Man.
Although Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed a third Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie, director Ken Kwapis recently shared some encouraging news. He seems enthusiastic about revisiting the story if the studio decides to move forward with the project.
