Cars 2027 Reboot Unveils Its Major Redesign

Disney has given fans a first glimpse of the new Cars series, revealing an updated look for Lightning McQueen. It’s been nearly ten years since Cars 3 and four years since the Cars on the Road miniseries on Disney+, and now Disney is revisiting the popular animated franchise. This time, Pixar is handing the creative reins to Disney Television Animation for Cars: Lightning Racers, a preschool series set to debut on Disney Jr. in 2027.

Almost a year after it was first announced, Disney Jr. shared a first look at the new preschool TV show based on Pixar’s popular Cars franchise. The preview image features the four main characters from Lightning Racers, including a younger version of Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson.

When the new movie Lightning Racers comes out next year, both the fast car McQueen and his buddy Mater will have updated looks. Disney Jr. is giving Mater, the tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, a similar makeover with a simpler design.

Radiator Springs is welcoming a new resident: Miles, a lime green monster truck who loves mud! You might recognize his voice – Miles is played by Yuri Lowenthal, the actor famous for voicing Spider-Man in the popular Insomniac Games, and he’s hinted at a possible appearance in the next Spider-Man 3 game.

The show will introduce “Pipes,” a purple drag car who loves adventure. Actress Leah Lewis, known for voicing Ember Luman in Pixar’s Elemental and appearing in Matlock and Nancy Drew, brings Pipes to life with her voice.

Since Miles and Pipes were designed specifically for the Lightning Racers series, their look is completely new and different from anything seen in the Cars movies. However, when you compare the animation styles of Lightning Racers to the Cars films, it’s noticeable that the TV series has a simpler style, likely due to budget and the fact that it’s aimed at a younger audience.

The official description for the new series confirms that Lightning McQueen and Mater will return, with Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy reprising their voice roles, for fresh adventures taking place in Radiator Springs.

In ‘Cars: Lightning Racers,’ Lightning McQueen is back for more fun in Radiator Springs! He’s joined by his funny buddy Mater, and two new friends: Pipes, a fast drag racer, and Miles, a monster truck who loves getting muddy.

Disney Jr. recently revealed a first look at their new series, Cars: Lightning Racers, and Variety confirmed that six original voice actors are returning. These include Bonnie Hunt as Sally, Jenifer Lewis as Flo, Guido Quaroni as Guido, Lloyd Sherr as Fillmore, Michael Wallis as Sheriff, and Paul Dooley as Sarge.

Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy are returning to voice their beloved characters, Lightning McQueen and Mater. Leah Lewis will be the voice of Pipes, and Yuri Lowenthal will voice Miles. Joining the cast is Sheryl Lee Ralph, known for her role in Abbott Elementary, who will play a new character named Ms. Blinker.

Cars: Lightning Racers Could Open the Doors to Pixar’s Cars 4

A Disney survey in November 2024 asked fans about their interest in a potential Cars 4, renewing excitement about the future of the Pixar series. While creator Jay Ward mentioned a year earlier that there were “more Cars things brewing,” many thought this meant a fourth movie was in the works. It now appears he was actually talking about the early stages of developing Lightning Racers instead.

Disney Jr.’s new show, Lightning Racers, is aimed at very young children, similar to shows like Spidey and His Amazing Friends. However, the series is bringing back most of the original Cars cast – including big names like Owen Wilson – which might appeal to longtime fans as well.

If Lightning Racers becomes as popular as expected, particularly with young children, Disney might realize there’s still strong demand for more Cars content and start thinking about a fourth movie. Pixar has shown with sequels to Toy Story and The Incredibles that revisiting established franchises is possible, even if it’s several years down the line.
