Gerard Butler is filming a new action movie called Empire City, but fans can now stream one of his earlier, surprisingly popular thrillers for free. While he’s famous for action roles in movies like Den of Thieves, the Has Fallen series, and Kandahar, this 2009 film proved to be a standout.
I remember when “Law Abiding Citizen” came out back in 2009! Gerard Butler played Clyde Shelton, a guy out for revenge after a terrible tragedy – his wife and daughter were murdered. It’s a pretty intense, R-rated action movie, and audiences really went for it. Despite costing around $53 million to make, it actually earned over $127 million at the box office. Critics weren’t impressed – it only has a 26% score on Rotten Tomatoes – but regular moviegoers clearly loved it, giving it a 75% rating on their ‘Popcornmeter’. It’s one of those films that audiences enjoyed even if the critics didn’t!
The action thriller Law Abiding Citizen isn’t currently available on any streaming services, but that’s changing on May 1st. It will be added to Tubi, a free streaming platform, so you can watch it without paying. While some have described the movie as excessively violent, it will be available to stream at no cost.
‘Law Abiding Citizen’ Features Gerard Butler at His Very Best
Featuring Jamie Foxx, Bruce McGill, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb, and Regina Hill, Law Abiding Citizen avoids becoming a typical, sensationalized thriller thanks to Gerard Butler’s strong performance. He plays a grieving husband and father with such charisma that we find ourselves supporting him, even when his methods are extreme.
Jamie Foxx is fantastic as Nick Rice, the prosecutor, and he plays off Gerard Butler’s character beautifully. Where Butler brings the wild energy, Foxx is all about control and procedure. Their contrasting approaches create some truly electric moments – honestly, the way they clash feels surprisingly genuine for a film like this, and it really elevates the whole thing.
What’s Happening With ‘Law Abiding Citizen 2’?

In 2022, Village Roadshow Pictures and Rivulet Films announced they were working on a sequel to the movie Law Abiding Citizen. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the script, and Gerard Butler was set to be an executive producer, along with Lucas Foster, who also produced the first film.
While no story details have been revealed, the producer mentioned the sequel’s core idea feels even more impactful now than the first movie did in 2009. He promised a shocking experience, but didn’t offer any specifics. Since then, there haven’t been any updates on Law Abiding Citizen 2, so it’s unclear if Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler will return, or if the film will follow a completely new storyline and cast.
While we’re excited to see what happens with this series, don’t miss Gerard Butler’s great performance in Law Abiding Citizen, which will be available to stream for free on Tubi starting May 1st.
