Hulu’s new show, based on the graphic novel Southern Bastards, promises to be a unique take on the comic book adaptation. While it shares similarities with shows like The Punisher in its dark and violent themes, it’s a completely separate story, not connected to Marvel. The series, created by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, has already been described as a gritty, vigilante-style drama.
As reported by Variety, Erin Kellyman, known for her role in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will star as Roberta in Southern Bastards. Roberta is a strong and determined military veteran who goes back to her hometown in Alabama to find her long-lost father.

The recent casting decision is interesting, especially considering this project seems more realistic and brutal than most comic book adaptations. While Southern Bastards isn’t becoming part of the Marvel universe (despite the actor previously appearing in Falcon and the Winter Soldier), it’s easy to see why people are making the comparison. The series has been called similar to The Punisher in style, and that similarity goes beyond just the overall feel.
Reinaldo Marcus Green, known for his work on the upcoming Marvel project The Punisher: One Last Kill, is directing and executive producing the pilot. This connection is particularly exciting for fans hoping to see more dark and character-focused stories in superhero adaptations.
Kellyman’s character, Roberta, has the potential to elevate Southern Bastards beyond typical genre storytelling. Described as a former Marine facing military charges after an event in Afghanistan, Roberta is a smart and deeply troubled woman haunted by her past and a legacy of violence. She arrives in Craw County seeking revenge, but to truly transform the county and dismantle the power of “Boss,” she’ll need to establish a life and find a sense of belonging there.

Kevin Bacon plays Earl Tubb, the father of the main character, and Tim McGraw will be the villain, Coach Boss. This casting is exciting – Bacon adds weight to the story, and McGraw is a surprisingly good choice for the bad guy. With Kellyman leading the way, this show has the potential to be one of Hulu’s most unique offerings.
Honestly, the timing of this announcement feels perfect. Naomi Kellyman is already getting a lot of buzz for her work in The Bone Temple, and this new role puts her right in the middle of what could be another huge franchise. It doesn’t have the instant recognition of a skull logo or a Marvel connection, but you can definitely see the potential here – it’s a really exciting project!
