Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of For All Mankind, titled “Home”. As For All Mankind heads into its fifth season, only one original cast member remains from when the acclaimed sci-fi series first launched on Apple TV+. Premiering in 2019, the show – created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi – was a key part of the launch of the Apple TV+ streaming service. The series was designed with the idea that characters and actors would gradually be replaced over time.
Each season of For All Mankind jumps forward about ten years from the last, beginning with the 1969 moon landing. Because of this timeline, it’s natural for characters to leave the show and actors to move on. The series starts with the hopeful spirit of early moon missions in season 1 and progresses to the challenges faced on Mars in season 5, covering five decades of space travel and Earth-based conflicts along the way.
In the third episode of For All Mankind season 5, the show said goodbye to Admiral Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman). The 81-year-old astronaut, already battling cancer, bravely risked everything for one last act of courage to help his friend, Lee Jung-Gil (C.S. Lee).
Ed died peacefully in his sleep, imagining himself back when he was a young, successful NASA astronaut, happily married to Karen (Shantel VanSanten) and with his friend Gordo Stevens (Michael Dorman) by his side. He was one of only two actors from the very beginning of the show For All Mankind still appearing in the fifth season.
Wrenn Schmidt’s Margo Madison Is The Last Original Actor From For All Mankind Season 1
Now that Joel Kinnaman and Ed Baldwin have left the show, Wrenn Schmidt’s character, Margo Madison, is the only original actor and character from the first season of For All Mankind still on the series. Born in 1941, Margo is 71 years old in season 5, which is set in 2012 – a decade younger than Ed Baldwin.
In season 5 of For All Mankind, Margo is imprisoned by the U.S. government, a stark contrast to her former position as NASA’s leader. After betraying the U.S. by sharing classified information with the KGB at the end of season 4, she spent eight years (1995-2003) living in Russia and eventually worked for Roscosmos, the Soviet space program.
In season 5 of For All Mankind, we find Margo has been in prison for nine years. She took the blame for the Mars mission capturing the wrong asteroid – the Goldilocks asteroid instead of one designated by the M-7 nations. Despite being in prison and older, Margo is still incredibly sharp and continues to mentor Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña).
The original main cast of For All Mankind season 1 is no longer with the show as the timeline has progressed. Characters like Ed Baldwin, Gordo Stevens, Tracy Stevens, Karen Baldwin, Molly Cobb, and Deke Slayton have all died within the series. While Ellen Wilson is still alive, she hasn’t been a major part of the story since season 3.
The future of Danielle Poole (played by Krys Marshall) on For All Mankind is currently unknown after the events of season 4. Marshall has joined the cast of another Hulu series, Paradise, leading to questions about whether she’ll return for season 5. While Danielle is still potentially alive – she was born in 1944 and would be 68 years old in 2012 – she isn’t listed as a series regular for the upcoming season. This means Wrenn Schmidt’s character, Margo, is now the last remaining original cast member from the show’s beginning.
Cora Pena’s Aleida & Cynthy Wu’s Kelly Are The Last Original For All Mankind Season 2 Actors
After being introduced in season 2 of For All Mankind, only two original actors – Coral Peña as Aleida Rosales and Cynthy Wu as Kelly Baldwin – remain with the show.
Aleida appeared in season one of For All Mankind as a child, played by Olivia Trujillo (ages 8-13). In season two, the show brought her back as an adult, with Coral Peña taking on the role of the now-brilliant engineer and continuing to play her since.
Kelly Baldwin was raised by Ed and Karen Baldwin and grew up in the early 1980s, as shown in season 2 of For All Mankind. Following in her father’s footsteps, Kelly later joined NASA and traveled to Mars. She is the mother of Alex, who is a central character in season 5 of For All Mankind, portrayed as a teenager by Sean Kaufman.
In season 4 of For All Mankind, Kelly and Aleida left NASA to work for Helios Aerospace, a company owned by billionaire Dev Ayesa (Edi Gathedi). This move allows Kelly to follow a path similar to her father, Ed, as Admiral Baldwin also previously left NASA to partner with Dev’s technologically advanced company.
As a huge fan of For All Mankind, I’m really hoping Margo survives! I think Wrenn Schmidt’s character could realistically make it to her 80s and potentially be the last one left from season 1 when the show finishes with season 6. But if Wrenn Schmidt does leave, it would be so interesting to see Coral Peña’s Aleida and Cynthu Wu’s Kelly become the veteran characters as the series wraps up.
