MGM+’s new series is officially happening! The final cast members for Legacy of Spies, a new adaptation of John le Carré’s work, have been announced, and filming has begun.
I’m so excited to hear Dan Stevens – you might know him from Downton Abbey or the new Godzilla x Kong movie – is joining the cast of Legacy of Spies! He’s going to play Bill Haydon, who sounds like a really interesting and mysterious character. It’s going to be awesome seeing him act alongside Matthew Macfadyen, who’s perfect as the legendary spy George Smiley.
I’m so excited about the cast they’ve put together for this show! Joining Hugh Macfadyen, we’ve got Charlie Hunnam playing Alec Leamas, this really cool, independent field operative. Then there’s Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler, who sounds like a super smart strategist for the East German intelligence. Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu is playing Doris Quinz, a young woman from East Germany who’s apparently key to everything. Agnes O’Casey is playing Liz Gold, and Felix Kammerer is Hans-Dieter Mundt – he sounds terrifying, like a really dangerous and unpredictable enforcer for the Stasi!
The talented cast of Jake Dunn, Safia Oakley-Green, Ariyon Bakare, Saskia Rosendahl, Patrick Güldenberg, and Volker Bruch join the production, playing both friends and enemies within the complex world of the Cold War story.
George Smiley Returns to the Small Screen
Macfadyen is the sixth actor to play George Smiley in a film or TV show, and the first in fifteen years. The most recent actor to take on the role was Gary Oldman, who played the veteran spy in the 2011 film adaptation of John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, earning an Academy Award nomination for his performance.
Before becoming famous as Marcus Brody in the Indiana Jones films, Denholm Elliot first portrayed Smiley in a television movie adaptation of A Murder of Quality.
The new eight-part thriller, Legacy of Spies, is inspired by John le Carré’s novels. While taking its name from his 2017 book A Legacy of Spies, the series mainly adapts his 1963 novel, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Stephen Cornwell and Clarisa Ingram wrote the scripts for television.
The novel Legacy of Spies begins with Alec Leamas, a seasoned intelligence officer, enlisting the help of Doris Quinz, a bright young woman from East Germany. He asks her to secretly bring important documents from the Stasi – East Germany’s secret police – to the West, and this action quickly triggers a dangerous chain of events set against the backdrop of Cold War Berlin.
Josef Fiedler and Hans-Dieter Mundt, determined Stasi agents, are relentlessly chasing Leamas and Doris. Driven by a fierce need to stop the intelligence leak, they’re also locked in a bitter competition with each other. Meanwhile, Liz Gold, a brave and principled young woman, gets caught up in the situation, forcing Leamas to confront a dangerous world of shifting alliances and inevitable betrayal.
The story follows George Smiley, a quiet but incredibly skilled intelligence operative, as he manages secret missions. A dangerous Soviet agent named Karla operates from the shadows, creating a conflict that will impact an entire generation. In this high-stakes world of espionage, personal relationships are sacrificed, and the boundaries between loyalty, love, and manipulation become dangerously unclear, turning every feeling into a potential tool.
