Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, has been through many tough fights – and worn many different costumes – throughout his career. Since appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s battled a variety of villains, and each conflict has happened at a different stage of his life. His costumes reflect these changes and the experiences he’s had, and Marvel is now recognizing how important those outfits are to his story.
Marvel has officially documented every Daredevil costume that’s considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve identified six iconic suits, starting with the original from Season 1 of the Netflix Daredevil series and going all the way to his most recent look in the current second season of Daredevil: Born Again.

The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen Suit

Before Matt Murdock had his iconic Daredevil suit, he wore a simple, temporary outfit. It consisted of a black long-sleeved shirt, military-style pants, and a bandana covering his eyes. This early costume wasn’t very durable and left him exposed to strong blows.
Despite taking a beating, the costume held up remarkably well during some of Daredevil‘s toughest fights, including the iconic hallway battle from Season 1—still considered one of the best action scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The power of that scene comes from how much damage Matt Murdock endures, and his casual, athletic look actually makes his struggle feel even more impactful.
This is where Matt begins his life as a vigilante, before he had a recognizable identity, costume, or even a clear strategy. The bandana is useful for staying hidden, but it also highlights that he’s not yet become a figure of hope or fear – he’s simply a resident of Hell’s Kitchen taking matters into his own hands to fight crime.
The First Daredevil Suit

By the end of the first season of Daredevil, Matt Murdock understood how dangerous Kingpin truly was. His usual outfit of a long-sleeve shirt and bandana wasn’t enough protection, considering he was facing enemies willing to use deadly force. It just made sense for him to upgrade his armor, much like even someone as heavily armed as the Punisher does before a fight.
As fans may remember, once Matt understood what he needed, he convinced Melvin Potter, a craftsman working for Wilson Fisk, to create his Daredevil suit. The suit was primarily red and tight-fitting, with black armor protecting his forearms, shoulders, knees, and chest – it was a significant upgrade to his crime-fighting gear. It also included specially designed batons that gave Matt an edge in the frequent, overwhelming fights he faced.
This change was significant because it officially gave the vigilante a name: Daredevil. It also marked a clear challenge to Wilson Fisk and all criminal activity in Hell’s Kitchen, essentially declaring war on them.
The Echo Suit

Matt Murdock’s Daredevil suit received a minor update between his appearances on Netflix and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The suit seen in the Echo series is clearly based on the original Netflix design, but with some improvements. The cowl seems to fit his head better, and the chest plate appears more substantial, giving the suit an overall more armored look.
The show features this during a fight between Daredevil and Maya Lopez, who was still working for Kingpin at the time.
This suit isn’t a flashy upgrade, but it’s subtly improved. The changes show that Matt has gained valuable experience and learned from every battle he’s fought while wearing previous versions.
The Red and Yellow Suit

The bright red and yellow Daredevil suit is a playful design that, while not universally loved, has become instantly recognizable. In the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Matt Murdock visited Los Angeles and asked Luke Jacobson, a famous superhero tailor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to create a new costume for him. After Leapfrog kidnapped Jacobson, Matt rescued him while wearing the newly designed suit – a striking crimson body with a yellow helmet and sleeves. This suit was directly inspired by a classic comic book look, and the show included it as a fun nod to longtime fans.
The Born Again Suit

The red suit Matt Murdock wears in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again is the most faithful recreation of his iconic comic book look. It’s a vibrant, clean red with striking black details that really stand out.
This suit holds a lot of painful memories for Matt. He wore it during his fight with Bullseye, after Bullseye tragically killed Foggy Nelson at Vanessa Fisk’s request. It was the suit he had on when everything fell apart in his life, and ultimately, he retired it after that devastating loss.
Predictably, he returns to action – crime never stops in Hell’s Kitchen. When a new threat, Muse, begins causing trouble, Matt reactivates his Daredevil persona and gets back to fighting crime. This hesitant return, and the events surrounding it, make this period as Daredevil particularly significant.
The Black Suit

Kingpin is gaining the upper hand against Daredevil. Now the mayor of New York City, he’s using a special task force to track down and capture masked heroes. With more power than ever before, Fisk has forced Matt Murdock into hiding while he prepares a new strategy – and he’s doing so while wearing a new black suit.
As a big Daredevil fan, I’ve been thinking about the black suit, and it’s really just a darker take on his classic red armor. It’s built the same way, has the same shape, but they’ve taken away the bright red that everyone recognizes. You only see a little bit of red in the ‘DD’ on his chest. Honestly, it feels right for where Matt is right now – he’s in a full-on war, and black just seems to fit that mood. Plus, after everything that went down with Foggy, it makes total sense he’d want a change of look, a fresh start, you know?
Season 2 of Born Again is off to a strong start, with Matt Murdock actively confronting Wilson Fisk in multiple ways. He’s building a team of allies, including the new White Tiger and Jessica Jones, though Jessica hasn’t had a major role yet.
