Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Episodes 3-4 Ending Explained: The Show’s Main Villain Is Here

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 3 and 4.

The comic series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord continues in issues 3 and 4, revealing the mastermind behind the story. Picking up right after the events of issues 1 and 2, the story follows Maul as he tries to rebuild his criminal empire. He seeks out the Pykes, eliminating their leader to advance his plans.

Maul’s story continued in episodes 3 and 4 as he kept trying to recruit Devon, one of the few remaining survivors of Order 66, to his cause. Throughout this, Lawson and Daki (Devon’s master) were determined to bring Maul to justice. This ultimately led to a showdown in the last scenes of Maul – Shadow Lord episode 4, where Janix’s police force battled Maul’s troops.

Even though Maul tried to resolve things calmly and establish himself as a different type of hero in the Star Wars universe, Lawson couldn’t reach an agreement with the former Sith Lord. This led to a massive firefight, a lightsaber duel between Maul, Daki, and Devon, a betrayal from Two-Boots, and ultimately revealed the true antagonist of the Maul – Shadow Lord story: The Empire.

The Empire’s Arrival Is Just As Bad For Maul As It Is For Lawson

When Two-Boots betrayed Lawson, he automatically contacted the Empire, even though Lawson was trying to prevent that from happening. The fourth episode of Maul – Shadow Lord concludes with the ominous Imperial March and the arrival of a Star Destroyer in Janix’s atmosphere, hinting at a new Imperial threat in the remaining episodes. While Maul – Shadow Lord is the first Star Wars story to focus on a villain, the introduction of the Empire as a force dilutes that unique aspect somewhat.

Maul and Lawson both have reasons to avoid involving the Empire. Maul needs to operate freely on Janix and isn’t ready to openly confront the Empire yet, so he’s laying low. Lawson also dislikes the Empire and wants to apprehend Maul, but he doesn’t want the Empire’s controlling influence to take hold on his planet.

While Maul remains a villain – and a complex one, as he was Star Wars’ first hero with questionable morals – the introduction of the Empire creates a shared enemy for him and Captain Lawson. This shifts the focus, making the Empire the primary antagonist of the show.

Is Devon Any Closer To Joining Maul?

In episodes 3 and 4 of Maul – Shadow Lord, Maul continued trying to train Devon as his apprentice. He thinks she could be the key to finally defeating Darth Sidious. Episode 3 focused on Maul’s efforts to convince her to join him. Eventually, he managed to get through to Devon, pushing her to unleash her anger and ultimately defeat him in combat.

During their fight, and again in episode 4, Maul had multiple opportunities to kill Devon but chose not to. He clearly has future plans for her, though it’s uncertain if she’ll side with him. The episode concluded with Devon rescuing Daki and leaving with her mentor, suggesting their continued partnership.

Despite everything, Maul managed to make Devon question whether he’s truly the villain the Jedi portrayed him to be. Since Maul is determined to continue trying to bring Devon over to his side, we can expect to see more of this dynamic unfold in future episodes.

How Maul Can Defeat The Empire

Now that the Empire has arrived and Maul is operating without an apprentice, the focus shifts to how he’ll challenge them after the events of Episode 4. Maul initially wanted to avoid Imperial involvement, but the trailers for Maul – Shadow Lord suggest he’ll have to confront them regardless.

Maul has a clear path to challenging the Empire. The show’s previews suggest he’ll face off against multiple Inquisitors. To weaken the Empire’s control over Janix, Maul could eliminate these Inquisitors, possibly with assistance from Devon and Daki, and continue expanding his criminal organization in the process.

As Maul earns more of Devon’s trust, he moves closer to his goal of killing Darth Sidious. While other Star Wars stories might change his fate, it will be fascinating to see how Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord develops his character, his schemes, and what happens next after the events of episode 4.
