Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Destroyer Is Leaving Netflix Ahead of New Sequel

As a huge Arnold Schwarzenegger fan, I have to say this is a bit disappointing to hear. He seems to be really enjoying life these days, which is fantastic, but apparently Netflix has some plans for one of his famous movie series that he probably won’t be thrilled about. It’s a shame when creative visions don’t align, especially with a legend like Arnold!

The company known for its black and red logo is facing new legal challenges related to its practice of frequently raising prices. As a result, they will soon remove one of the films starring the former Mr. Olympia from his Conan series from their streaming service.

On May 1st, Netflix will remove Conan the Destroyer, along with several classic films from the same period, such as the entire Jaws series and the 1984 version of Dune.

Conan the Destroyer Got Destroyed by Critics

While it has gained a dedicated following over time, Conan the Destroyer wasn’t nearly as popular or successful for Arnold Schwarzenegger as his iconic sci-fi films like Terminator, Total Recall, or Predator.

The first Conan the Barbarian movie was generally well-received, with critics giving it a 67% approval rating and audiences liking it even more at 74%. However, the sequel, Conan the Destroyer, wasn’t as popular. It received a low 29% rating from critics, and over 50,000 audience reviews gave it an average score of just 38%.

Even as a huge fan of Schwarzenegger’s work, I have to admit Conan the Destroyer is generally considered one of his weaker films. But it’s wild to think he might revisit that series after all these years and try to give it a proper send-off!

Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed in March that Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Tom Cruise in his last four films, has been hired to write and direct the next King Conan movie, according to TheArnoldFans.

Arnold Is Back — King Conan Is On the Way

That’s right: a third Conan film, King Conan, , Schwarzenegger explained.

They’re writing the script with the character’s age in mind – I can still be action-packed, but it’ll be different than before. With King Conan, the story is that after forty years as king, he’s forced out of his kingdom, leading to conflict. He eventually returns, and there’s a lot of chaos, violence, magic, and fantastical creatures involved.

He also mentioned the increased use of special effects in modern films, noting that studios have the financial resources to create large-scale, impressive projects, and he’s excited to see what they come up with.

I was so excited to hear about Arnold Schwarzenegger potentially joining King Conan and Commando 2! Plus, 20th Century Studios apparently wants to bring him back into the Predator movies, which would be amazing. Right now, though, it feels like Conan the Destroyer is all about looking back and enjoying the classics, so we should definitely appreciate it while we can!
