Euphoria Creator Reveals Why Angus Cloud’s Fez Is Alive In Season 3

Fezco’s season 3 return wasn’t handled lightly.

The popular HBO series Euphoria, created by Sam Levinson and first released in 2019, follows a group of high school students navigating the complexities of love, relationships, drugs, and friendship. Angus Cloud, who played the character Fezco in the first two seasons, sadly passed away in 2023. However, it has been confirmed that Fezco will still appear in season 3.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Levinson discussed bringing the character Fez back for Euphoria season 3. He explained that, following the actor Angus Cloud’s passing, he felt it was important to continue Fez’s story on screen. “I couldn’t save Angus, but I could keep his character alive in the show,” Levinson said. He added that Fez will have a significant storyline this season and believes Cloud would have been proud of it.

Levinson shares that Cloud’s passing profoundly influenced the direction of season 3, prompting him to deeply explore themes of faith and purpose. He elaborates that this event led him to focus on these questions throughout the season.

I cared for Angus deeply and did everything I could to help him through his struggles. After he passed away, I started thinking about what I wanted to convey, what truly matters in life. If I continued with the show, I wanted it to explore bigger themes of meaning, purpose, and our place in the world. It inspired me to address ideas of faith and believing in something beyond ourselves.

The upcoming season jumps ahead several years after the end of Euphoria season two, showing the main characters navigating life after high school. Creator Sam Levinson explains he was drawn to the idea of adulthood as a period of limitless possibility, like the “wild west.” He’s interested in exploring how the characters have changed and the repercussions of their past choices.

As a huge Euphoria fan, I’ve been keeping up with all the trailer reveals, and it’s wild to see where everyone’s at after high school! Cassie and Nate are actually getting married, which is… a lot. Lexi and Maddy are both pursuing careers in Hollywood, which makes sense for them. And sadly, it looks like Rue is still struggling with addiction after everything she went through in season two. It’s going to be a tough season, but I’m definitely ready to watch!

Season 3 will bring back Hunter Schafer as Jules, alongside the final television appearance of Eric Dane as Cal. Dane sadly passed away in February after sharing his diagnosis of ALS last April.

Levinson shared that Dane informed him about his ALS diagnosis several months prior to filming. He remembers telling Dane, ‘I love you, and no matter what, we’ll figure things out and make the show work.’ Levinson emphasized their focus was on creating a supportive and comfortable atmosphere, and he believes Dane delivers a fantastic performance this season.

It’s still unknown if season 3 of Euphoria will be the show’s final season. Sam Levinson, the creator, is deliberately avoiding a direct answer about the show’s future, leaving fans uncertain.

I approach every project as if it’s my last, and I truly mean that. When I finish writing or finalizing the sound, I ask myself if I’m proud of the work and if I’d be satisfied with it as a final product. Then, I trust that everything else is out of my hands.

Following a direct question, Levinson didn’t give a clear answer. However, Zendaya recently hinted at the show’s conclusion during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, saying she believes season 3 might be the end, and that “closure is coming.”

While it’s still uncertain if Euphoria will continue, the next season will definitely include Cloud’s character. The direction of Fez’s storyline is still a mystery, but fans can expect a potentially heartbreaking experience.
