For 25 years, Jason Statham has been known for action roles, but his new movie, Mutiny, marks his first time starring in a classic heist film. His early work with Guy Ritchie, like Snatch, showed a path where he could have become a respected character actor known for British roles.
Jason Statham’s martial arts training led him to focus on action movies. Since his action debut in the 2001 film Ghosts of Mars, he’s mostly stayed within that genre. While he’s occasionally appeared in comedies or dramas, like Spy, Statham understands what his fans want and consistently delivers.
As a movie fan, it’s amazing to me that Jason Statham is still a huge draw after two decades! 2024’s The Beekeeper did really well, and he’s still leading those massive franchises like The Expendables and Fast & Furious. It looks like he might be starting another one too, with Mutiny coming out in 2026.
The film features Jason Statham as a former police officer seeking revenge while undercover on a ship to dismantle a human trafficking ring. Predictably, the criminals fight back, leading to a series of intense fights and shootouts. This premise is reminiscent of Die Hard, making it a unique role for Statham.
Mutiny Marks Jason Statham’s First “Die On A Blank” Movie
The original Bruce Willis film Die Hard inspired a wave of similar action movies. These films, often called “Die Hard on a Blank,” usually involve a clever protagonist stuck in a confined and dangerous place – like a building, train, or bus – and battling a group of heavily armed hijackers.
While the ‘lone hero against impossible odds’ formula isn’t strictly necessary, it’s surprising Jason Statham hasn’t starred in a movie like Die Hard after being an action star for over two decades. Some might point to films like The Expendables 4 or Ghosts of Mars, but those don’t really fit the classic mold.
Mutiny is the first film where Jason Statham truly embodies the ‘Die Hard’ action hero – a character who fights off a lot of villains while also trying to save people. The movie even features a scene of him crawling through air vents, a clear nod to the classic film.
Every Major Action Star Has Their Own Die Hard Scenario Movie
Following the success of Die Hard, it became a trend for action heroes to star in movies with a similar premise – essentially, “Die Hard on a [Location].” Keanu Reeves had Speed, Harrison Ford starred in Air Force One, Steven Seagal had adventures on both a boat and a train in the Under Siege films, and many others followed suit.
Most action heroes have played a role where they’re the only one who can save the day in a dangerous, contained situation – think of the movie Die Hard. But Jason Statham surprisingly hasn’t had that type of role yet. While it probably wasn’t planned, it makes his new film, Mutiny, feel a bit fresher. If the movie does well, it could open the door for Statham to take on that classic scenario in a sequel, maybe saving passengers on a hijacked vehicle or even in space.
Mutiny Feels Like An Unofficial Sequel To Another Die Hard On A Blank Movie
The trailer for Mutiny immediately shows the style of director Jean-François Richet, who previously made the unexpected 2023 action hit Plane. That film starred Gerard Butler and Mike Colter, and Colter was originally going to reprise his role in a sequel called Ship. However, Colter shared in 2026 that the project was cancelled when Butler decided not to participate.
The trailer for Mutiny strongly resembles the earlier film Ship. Director Richet is known for making exciting action movies out of basic ideas, so it’s likely he repurposed his original plans for Ship into this new film, Mutiny. It’s a smart move – why let good ideas go to waste?
