All 9 Lord Of The Rings Movie Characters That Have Now Been Recast

J.R.R. Tolkien first introduced readers to the expansive world of Middle-earth with his 1937 children’s book, The Hobbit, and later developed it further in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. While some characters will reappear throughout the most famous stories set in Middle-earth, actors who portray them have sometimes been replaced over time.

The stories had been turned into movies and other formats before, but they really took off with Peter Jackson’s live-action Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The world of The Lord of the Rings keeps growing, with the recent Prime Video series The Rings of Power, the anime film The War of the Rohirrim, and new movies like The Hunt for Gollum and Shadow of the Past on the way.

These projects revisit familiar characters from Jackson’s films, but often at earlier or later stages in their lives. This has meant some actors have been replaced, and we can expect more recasting in future installments.

Círdan

Fellowship of the Ring, Return of the King, Rings of Power

Círdan was a highly respected and noble Elf of the Sindar people, known for his wisdom and foresight. He was one of the Elves given a powerful Ring – Narya – which he eventually passed on to Gandalf.

In Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, Círdan has a small role. He appears in the opening prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring holding a ring, and again at the end of The Return of the King as the elves leave Middle-earth. Michael Elsworth played Círdan in both of these scenes.

Círdan appears in The Rings of Power with a more significant part than he had in the films. Ben Daniels portrays him, and in the series, he still holds the ring Narya.

Elendil

Fellowship of the Ring, Rings of Power

As a huge Tolkien fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Elendil. He’s Isildur and Anárion’s dad, but more than that, he’s the leader who saved a remnant of the people of Númenor when their island was destroyed. He brought them all the way to Middle-earth and established the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor – basically becoming the first king of both! You can actually catch a glimpse of him in the opening of The Fellowship of the Ring, fighting in that epic Battle of the Last Alliance. It’s a quick scene, but a really important one for understanding the history of Middle-earth.

Peter McKenzie originally played Elendil, who dies in battle after being struck by Sauron’s mace. In the series Rings of Power, Elendil’s role is expanded – he’s portrayed as a Númenórean sailor who ultimately leads the alliance between Elves and Men. Lloyd Owen takes on the role of Elendil in Rings of Power.

Elrond

Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey & The Battle of the Five Armies, Rings of Power

Elrond is a Half-elf who rules Rivendell. He’s the father of Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen, and possesses Vilya, one of the elven Rings of Power. Hugo Weaving famously portrayed Elrond in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, appearing in all three films. As the wise and long-lived Lord of Rivendell, Elrond is skilled in healing and strategy, serves on the White Council, and acts as a mentor to Aragorn.

Hugo Weaving returned as Elrond in the first and third Hobbit movies, where he helped interpret a map, recognize important swords, and fought in the Battle of the Five Armies. In the series The Rings of Power, a younger Elrond is played by Robert Aramayo. The show delves into Elrond’s past, revealing his decision to live forever.

Isildur

Fellowship of the Ring, Rings of Power

Isildur, the eldest son of Elendil, co-founded and ruled the kingdom of Gondor with his brother Anárion. During the final battle against Sauron, Isildur took the One Ring from Sauron’s hand but chose not to destroy it. The Ring began to corrupt him, and ultimately led to his death at the Gladden Fields, causing the Ring to be lost for hundreds of years.

Isildur appears briefly at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring and in scenes showing his earlier experiences with the Ring. In the films, actor Harry Sinclair portrayed him. Like several other characters, Isildur has a more significant role in The Rings of Power, where he’s played by Maxim Baldry. This new series explores Isildur’s history in greater detail.

Gil-galad

Fellowship of the Ring, Rings of Power

Gil-galad is an Elf who appears at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. As the last of his kind in Middle-earth, he joins forces with Elendil to create the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, leading the Elven armies against Sauron. In the prologue of the first Lord of the Rings movie, actor Mark Ferguson portrays Gil-galad in a brief battle scene with Orcs.

Gil-galad appears more prominently in Rings of Power, portrayed by Benjamin Walker. In the series, he’s the High King of the Elves and governs the land of Lindon.

Galadriel

Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy, Rings of Power

Galadriel is an Elf and a noblewoman of the woods of Lothlórien. She’s a central figure in The Lord of the Rings, known as the most powerful and beautiful of all Elves in Middle-earth. Galadriel possessed Nenya, the Ring of Water, and showed it to Frodo.

Cate Blanchett famously portrayed Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and made a smaller appearance in The Hobbit trilogy. Now, Morfydd Clark plays Galadriel in Rings of Power, which delves into her history, showing her struggling with the loss of her brother and her unwavering mission to defeat Sauron.

Bilbo Baggins

Fellowship of the Ring, Return of the King, The Hobbit Trilogy

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit enjoying a quiet life in the Shire when the wizard Gandalf arrives and invites him on an adventure with Thorin and a group of dwarves to reclaim their homeland, Erebor. During this journey, Bilbo discovers a mysterious ring in a cave – later revealed to have belonged to a creature named Gollum – and keeps it hidden. Years later, Bilbo chooses his nephew, Frodo, to inherit his possessions, including the ring.

Ian Holm famously portrayed Bilbo Baggins in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King. Martin Freeman took on the role in The Hobbit trilogy, which tells the story of Bilbo’s adventure, from when Gandalf first asks for his help to his eventual homecoming with the One Ring.

Gandalf

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit Trilogy, Rings of Power

Gandalf is a mighty wizard sent to Middle-earth to fight against the dark lord Sauron. He famously guided Thorin and his company of dwarves, including Bilbo, on their quest to take back the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. He also played a crucial role in creating the Fellowship of the Ring and ultimately led the forces of good in the fight against Sauron during the War of the Ring.

As a huge fan of Tolkien’s world, I’ve always loved Gandalf. Seeing Ian McKellen portray him in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies was iconic, so I was really curious about how they’d handle him in Rings of Power. It was interesting that they initially introduced him as “The Stranger” – this mysterious figure falling to earth as a meteor! It wasn’t long before the show revealed he was Gandalf, now played by Daniel Weyman, and it was great to see the character return to the screen.

Aragorn

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hunt for Gollum

Aragorn, who also goes by Strider and Elessar, is a skilled ranger and warrior, and the descendant of Isildur. He’s a central figure in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, famously portrayed by Viggo Mortensen. Throughout the films, Aragorn battles his own insecurities as he strives to accept his destiny as king. He eventually marries Arwen, the daughter of Elrond.

Andy Serkis, the director of the new movie The Hunt for Gollum, has confirmed they are searching for an actor to portray a younger Aragorn. He told Ebaster that Aragorn will appear in the film, necessitating the casting of someone to play the character in his earlier years.
