Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is famous for its strong and beloved heroes, but a story is only as good as its villains. Dragon Ball excels in this area, creating antagonists that drive the plot and push the heroes to their absolute limits, often over the course of entire story arcs.
A common theme in Dragon Ball is giving villains another chance, whether they redeem themselves or are simply brought back to life with the Dragon Balls. Fans have become accustomed to seeing characters like Frieza, Android 17, Hit, and Broly reappear. While it’s exciting when familiar enemies return, there are some Dragon Ball villains that most fans believe are truly defeated for good.
Mercenary Tao Is One of Dragon Ball’s Most Irredeemable Humans
When Mercenary Tao first appears in the original Dragon Ball, he immediately stands out as a ruthless and focused fighter. He’s willing to kill without a second thought and is completely dedicated to completing his assignment, no matter the consequences. Beyond his cold-blooded nature, Tao is incredibly powerful, with abilities like the Dodon Ray and Dark Nimbus that are comparable to Goku’s. He unexpectedly reappears at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, having been rebuilt with cybernetic enhancements that allowed him to survive.
Cyborg Tao reappears in a couple of filler episodes during the Cell Games Saga, and it’s likely he dies offscreen. He’s fulfilled his role in the story, and given his ruthless nature, a return seems improbable. If Dragon Ball were to bring back an evil human from the original series, Master Shen would be a more likely candidate. Shen has stronger ties to several characters and isn’t quite as directly responsible for as much bloodshed as Tao.
Nappa Is a Relic of Dragon Ball’s Past
Nappa appears early in Dragon Ball Z, before the idea of Super Saiyans even existed. He immediately establishes himself as a powerful threat, inflicting devastating losses on the Z-Fighters that they struggle to overcome. While Nappa easily defeats and kills characters like Chiaotzu, Tien, and Piccolo with his raw Saiyan strength, his appearance also marks a significant shift in the series. The fact that Goku quickly surpasses Nappa demonstrates the new, higher power levels that define the evolving story.
Nappa played a functional role in the early part of Dragon Ball Z, but he isn’t a particularly compelling character. Dragon Ball GT briefly resurrected him, only to quickly defeat him again. There’s little left to develop with Nappa, and it’s more probable that characters like Raditz or Bardock will return before he does. Bringing Nappa back now would feel forced and like a transparent effort to appeal to nostalgia.
Babidi’s Malevolent Manipulation Sorcery Has Run Its Course
The Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z features many villains. While Majin Buu is the biggest threat, he’s only able to cause destruction because Babidi manipulates events from behind the scenes, gathering the energy needed to revive Buu. Babidi isn’t strong physically, but he has powerful abilities that allow him to control Buu for a long time, until Buu’s troublesome and unappreciative nature leads to Babidi’s downfall.
Babidi could be a powerful enemy to revive, but his impact feels lessened now. The series Dragon Ball DAIMA reveals that Babidi and his father, Bibidi, mostly relied on the power of stronger magic users like Great Witch Marba. This makes a full return for Babidi less appealing. There are other magical villains who would be more effective and aren’t as frustrating to deal with. Ultimately, Babidi isn’t worth the trouble.
Only the Super Dragon Balls Could Restore Zamasu
One of the biggest challenges faced by the heroes of Dragon Ball comes from Zamasu, a frustrated god. Zamasu, a trainee Supreme Kai from Universe 10, teams up with his future self to steal Goku’s body, become immortal using the Super Dragon Balls, and destroy all mortal life. His plan is so extensive that it ultimately requires Future Zeno to erase the entire timeline to fix the disaster.
Zamasu has gone too far to be saved, and his actions have destroyed his reputation throughout the universe. Gowasu, the Supreme Kai of Universe 10, continues to suffer the repercussions of Zamasu’s betrayal. Furthermore, Zamasu was completely erased, leaving nothing to bring back. Even the incredibly powerful Super Dragon Balls couldn’t revive him, and anyone attempting to do so would face severe consequences, as Zamasu was a force of chaos.
Android 19 Is Outdated Tech That Deserves To Stay In Dragon Ball’s Past
The use of Androids is a long-standing element in the Dragon Ball series, and it provides a way to bring back villains even after they’ve been defeated. Instead of recreating old Androids, the series can introduce improved versions. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero explores this with Cell Max, and a new invention, while Dragon Ball GT brought back and upgraded Android 17 as Super 17.
Looking ahead in Dragon Ball, it’s easy to picture the series revisiting its androids. However, bringing back Android 19 wouldn’t be a good choice. While his design is memorable, he’s simply too weak and outdated. It just wouldn’t make sense unless it was purely for the sake of nostalgia. A much better option would be a revamped and more powerful Android 16 – that’s something fans would genuinely enjoy. In fact, even Androids 13, 14, and 15 would be more valuable additions and are more likely to reappear than Android 19.
The Demon Realm’s Gomah Has Nothing Left to Offer
The main villain of Dragon Ball DAIMA, Demon King Gomah, only becomes a serious threat when he unlocks the power of his Evil Third Eye. Once activated, Gomah’s strength exceeds even Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta, and he can recover from injuries that would normally be fatal. This makes him an incredibly powerful opponent who can’t be beaten until his Evil Third Eye is destroyed.
Gomah doesn’t have the strength to pose a real threat, so his return isn’t very compelling. While Dragon Ball DAIMA could give him more power through Demon Realm artifacts, it would be more effective to focus on expanding the Demon Realm itself and introducing a genuinely frightening villain. Fans are much more interested in seeing Mira, Towa, and Mechikabura officially appear in the series than they are in seeing more of Gomah.
Captain Ginyu’s Dragon Ball Super Comeback Was a Complete Waste
Though they appear briefly in Dragon Ball Z, the Ginyu Force has become incredibly popular with fans due to their memorable and quirky personalities. They’ve continued to appear in extra content like filler episodes, flashbacks, and video games—the latter even adding a new member to the team. Captain Ginyu, the Ginyu Force’s leader and strongest fighter, finally returns in Dragon Ball Super during the Golden Frieza Saga.
Man, it’s just frustrating to see Ginyu back, but as Tagoma after all that time stuck as a frog! It felt like his one real shot at a comeback, and honestly, he totally fumbled it. I think bringing him—or any of the Ginyu Force, really—back again would just feel… pointless. It kind of cheapens his whole attempt at getting revenge, you know? We’ve seen enough, and it’s time to let that storyline rest.
