7 Near-Perfect Sci-Fi Games That No One Remembers Today

Science fiction is a hugely popular genre for video games, and for good reason. The combination of futuristic stories and the technology used to create games is a natural fit. Titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Dead Space demonstrate the incredible potential of sci-fi games.

Lots of science fiction games are well-known and loved, but some great ones tend to be overlooked. Games like Project Eden don’t get much attention, but any sci-fi fan should definitely give them a try.

Anachronox Is Perfect for Fans of Doom

Anachronox is a science fiction role-playing game created by Tom Hall, known for his work on classic titles like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. The game takes place on the planet Anachronox, which was once thought to be home to an alien civilization. The main character, Sylvester “Sly Boots” Bucelli, accidentally discovers this and teams up with allies to prevent a disaster.

Unlike many serious Western RPGs, Anachronox is surprisingly funny, blending humor with elements of film noir and cyberpunk. But it’s not just the tone that’s appealing – the gameplay is enjoyable too. The unique “MysTech” system lets you create items, even weapons, from practically anything you find.

Anachronox is a classic RPG. While it may seem a little dated now, the original game is still excellent. Luckily, it’s readily available on Steam, making it easy for new players to find.

Remember Me Was One of John Carpenter’s Favorite Games

Remember Me is an action-adventure game created by Dontnod Entertainment, the studio behind the Life is Strange series. The game takes place in a futuristic Paris in 2084 and centers around Nilin, a character who fights against a powerful, corrupt company that has stolen and wiped her memories. It’s a moving and atmospheric science fiction story.

The game Remember Me features interesting gameplay elements that match its cyberpunk setting. For instance, the screen distorts when Nilin is hurt, creating a sense of urgency. She also has a wide range of combat abilities to help her survive, though the game itself isn’t widely remembered.

Project Eden Is a Fantastic Multiplayer Sci-Fi Game

Project Eden is an action-packed adventure game taking place in a futuristic city. A mysterious wave of disappearances is sweeping through the population, and the city’s police force, the Urban Protection Agency, is investigating the cause deep within the city’s underbelly.

Project Eden is best enjoyed with friends! It’s a great cooperative game where you can play as any of the main characters, similar to how it works in Left 4 Dead. Even if you play alone, it’s fun to explore the massive city and battle dangerous cannibals, using each character’s unique skills to your advantage.

BioForge Is More Than an Interactive Movie

BioForge is an action-adventure game that plays like an interactive movie, using full-motion videos to tell its story. It’s set in a universe controlled by a powerful intergalactic federation with ambitions to expand even further. Players control a cyborg who must help scientists stop the federation’s plans for galactic domination.

Actually, BioForge isn’t a simple interactive movie where players just watch the story unfold. It’s a true action-adventure game where you’ll be actively fighting to progress. Plus, it featured a cool health regeneration system, which was pretty innovative for its time.

The Dig Is Steven Spielberg’s Gaming Masterpiece

The Dig is a classic adventure game where you click to explore and solve puzzles. It started as an idea by Steven Spielberg for his TV show, Amazing Stories. The game’s story centers around a dangerous asteroid on a collision course with Earth. This asteroid is actually hollow, and humanity needs the help of friendly aliens to find a way to destroy it.

Despite being made by the same team behind lighthearted games like Sam & Max Hit the Road and Monkey Island, The Dig is surprisingly gripping. The game also proves Steven Spielberg is a talented writer for video games, challenging players with difficult choices as they try to save Earth from an asteroid.

FreeSpace 2 Is a Surprisingly Realistic Space Combat Game

FreeSpace 2 is a space combat game unique for taking place entirely in the vastness of outer space, rather than on planets. The game is filled with spaceships constantly engaged in intense battles.

Despite not selling well, FreeSpace 2 is a truly excellent space combat game. Players can freely roam a huge galaxy when they’re not engaged in thrilling dogfights. The first-person perspective really puts you in the cockpit, making the battles incredibly immersive and intense.

System Shock 2 Is Why AI Shouldn’t Run Free

System Shock 2 is an action role-playing game that combines science fiction with the scary elements of survival horror. The game takes place in 2114 on the abandoned spaceship Von Braun, where the crew has been absorbed into a collective intelligence called “the Many.” This hive mind is controlled by aliens and can mimic the forms of those it has taken over.

This sets the stage for SHODAN, a dangerous AI, to seize control of the ship—and potentially the entire universe. While continuing the narrative from the original System Shock, the game boldly reimagines the series, and the outcome is…

As a huge fan of sci-fi horror, I honestly think the original System Shock and especially System Shock 2 don’t get nearly the recognition they deserve. They really laid the groundwork for so many games we love today! The best part is, System Shock 2 is easy to find on Steam, so anyone interested should absolutely give it a shot – it’s a classic for a reason.
