Karl Urban is no stranger to adaptations, and there’s one in particular that he’s ready to star in.
Lewis Tan is gearing up for the release of Mortal Kombat II, where he’ll play the popular video game character Johnny Cage, who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat in 1992. The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie was a success on HBO Max, even though it only earned $84 million in theaters worldwide. Because of its popularity on streaming, a sequel is scheduled to be released on May 15th.
Karl Urban recently discussed his work with Square Mile, including his role in the final season of Prime Video’s The Boys and the upcoming Mortal Kombat sequel. He also revealed a particular gaming series he’s eager to be involved with, calling it “one of my favorites.” When asked about potential gaming adaptations he’d like to take on, Urban’s choice is quite fitting.
I really love Red Dead Redemption. It’s a truly great game, and it’s interesting to me because I didn’t grow up deeply involved in gaming. While I enjoy the chance to escape into games now, I couldn’t afford consoles when they first came out in 1994 – I was an actor in Sydney and struggling financially at the time.
I was always too caught up with work and traveling to really start playing. But whenever I had a little free time, Red Dead Redemption was definitely a game I enjoyed thinking about. John Marston is just a fantastic character, and I’d love to get the chance to play as him.
Personality Quiz
John Marston, the main character in both Red Dead Redemption games, goes through a significant transformation, changing from a wild outlaw into a man dedicated to his family and seeking forgiveness for his past. He’s portrayed as clever, brave, and headstrong, but also as someone who’s distrustful, sarcastic, and prone to using violence – a description that surprisingly echoes the character of Billy Butcher from The Boys. Butcher, like Marston, is a tough, cynical individual with a violent streak, though his background is as a former British special forces operative turned vigilante.
Karl Urban is known for taking on diverse roles in popular franchises, including Éomer in The Lord of the Rings, Dr. McCoy in the Star Trek reboot, Billy Butcher in The Boys, Skurge in Thor: Ragnarök, and Judge Dredd in Dredd. Given his recent work and publicly stated enthusiasm for the game, casting him in a Red Dead Redemption adaptation would be a natural fit. Whether this will happen remains to be seen.
Mortal Kombat II will fight its way into theaters on May 15.
