The second episode of Invincible Season 4 showed a disturbing flashback that explained the brutal origins of Viltrumite society. It revealed the history behind the ‘Great Purge,’ where billions of weaker Viltrumites were killed by the ‘Great Betrayer.’ Surprisingly, Viltrumites didn’t see this as a tragedy, but as a necessary act to eliminate weakness from their people.
The second episode of Invincible Season 4 began with a flashback showing a young Nolan Grayson recounting the story of the Great Purge to a group of Viltrumite children.

Nolan, the teacher, asked one student to justify the ‘purge.’ She responded by arguing it demonstrated their dominance, explaining that this justified their claim to the universe – essentially, she believed they were entitled to it because they had the power to take it.

Nolan bluntly informed the children that at least two of them wouldn’t survive the next day’s combat training. This revealed that deaths among young Viltrumites during fighting were sadly commonplace. Disturbingly, the children didn’t even seem surprised by the possibility of someone dying.

Nolan quickly ended the class, telling students to get ready for training and even suggesting they “bring a weapon” to protect themselves.
Your training for today is finished. Now, find something to eat and a place to sleep if possible. Be back here tomorrow at sunrise, ready to fight. Understand that some of you won’t survive, so it’s wise to come prepared with a weapon.

The flashback revealed Nolan’s parents violently attacking him – a brutal tradition called the “Day of Adulthood” in Viltrumite culture. This rite of passage involved parents attempting to kill their child to test their strength and determine if they were worthy of becoming an adult.
This series of events confirmed the belief that violence tends to repeat itself, even across generations, suggesting a bleak future for those involved. It also explained why Omni-Man was so strict and demanding with his son, Mark, during the first season, leading up to their intense and pivotal confrontation in the finale.
The fourth season of Invincible began streaming on Amazon Prime Video on March 18th, with new episodes released each week until the season finale on April 22nd.
Why The Reality of Being a Viltrumite Child Is So Disturbing
The second episode of Invincible Season 4 reveals a deeply unsettling aspect of Viltrumite society – their treatment of children – which highlights just how focused they are on power and how little regard they have for others.
This explains the surprisingly small number of Viltrumites remaining in Season 4 of Invincible, especially considering the massive war about to begin between them and the Coalition of Planets. It’s a really worrying sign.
Although these individuals are not originally from Earth, being raised around the Viltrumites robs them of a typical childhood and the chance to develop emotionally. They’re essentially treated as tools by the Viltrumites, denied the affection and respect necessary for healthy growth and a normal life.
Learning about Nolan’s difficult upbringing, particularly his “Day of Adulthood” initiation, makes his eventual turn towards good in Invincible more meaningful. He manages to avoid repeating the cycle of violence by letting Mark become the hero fans expect, instead of imposing his own cruel Viltrumite beliefs on him.
