The ending of The Mandalorian Season 2, with Grogu going off with Luke Skywalker, seemed to promise an exciting new direction. Having such a strong Force-sensitive child trained by a legendary Jedi felt like anything could happen. Unfortunately, The Book of Boba Fett changed things, and that potential quickly faded.
In the sixth chapter of The Book of Boba Fett, called “From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” Luke Skywalker presents Grogu with a tough decision: continue his Jedi training with Yoda’s lightsaber, or choose the special beskar armor Din Djarin made for him and return to being a Mandalorian. By the end of the season, Grogu shows up at Peli Motto’s hangar wearing the armor, signaling his final choice – he left the lightsaber behind.
While the decision felt good emotionally, it sparked a lot of debate among Star Wars fans. Many felt Grogu was being forced to choose a single path. Because the Jedi don’t allow personal attachments and prioritize the Jedi Order, choosing that path would have meant giving up Din, something Grogu couldn’t do given their strong bond. Now, with the upcoming movie The Mandalorian & Grogu, Lucasfilm has a chance to explore that decision again and allow Grogu to have the best of both worlds.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Can Reverse Luke Skywalker’s Ultimatum

Revisiting the scene in Chapter 6, the way Luke presented the situation wasn’t quite right. He made it seem like Grogu only had two options: train as a Jedi or give up that path and continue with the armor. However, there was actually a third possibility that wasn’t offered to him.
Okay, so as a huge Star Wars fan, I recently learned something really cool. Over a thousand years before the events of The Mandalorian, there was this Mandalorian warrior named Tarre Vizsla who actually became a Jedi! Can you believe it? He wasn’t just any Jedi either – he became a Knight and, while he was in the Order, he created the Darksaber. That awesome black-bladed lightsaber we see in The Mandalorian? Yeah, that’s his creation. It’s made with Beskar steel, and honestly, it’s just a unique weapon – a perfect combination of Mandalorian craftsmanship and Jedi power. It’s seriously one of the coolest things in the galaxy!
Eventually, Tarre Vizsla came back to Mandalore and brought its feuding clans together, becoming their leader, known as the Mand’alor. He uniquely held the skills of both a Jedi and a Mandalorian warrior, a background that could be ideal for Grogu, who still shows signs of the Force even after embracing the way of the Mandalorian.
Luke’s approach to Grogu’s difficult decision stemmed from the traditional Jedi training he received. He was taught to completely let go of personal attachments – family, background, and even a sense of self. Ironically, this very teaching played a role in Anakin Skywalker’s downfall, and Luke himself had defied it by trying to save his father. Though he understood the flaws in this doctrine, Luke seemed to forget that lesson when guiding Grogu.
There’s a great chance to wrap up this storyline in a satisfying way. The new movie continues Din and Grogu’s journey after the events of The Mandalorian Season 3, and follows them as they work with the New Republic to tackle remaining Imperial leaders who are causing trouble in the galaxy.
The official description of the new movie suggests Grogu will have a bigger role as Din Djarin’s apprentice. Hopefully, this means he’ll be doing more and acting less like a baby. He’s already proven he can use the Force, and now fans are hoping to see him become a stronger fighter, maybe even learn to use a lightsaber and fully embrace his Jedi potential.
A promotional poster for The Mandalorian Season 3 showed Grogu training with Luke Skywalker and a yellow lightsaber. While that scene didn’t quite happen as shown in the series, it sparked hope that Grogu might eventually wield a lightsaber. The new series, The Mandalorian & Grogu, could finally make that happen.

This development doesn’t have to happen all at once in the movie. It could unfold naturally as the story progresses, building to a climax where Grogu appears to accept aspects of both his cultures. This is a shift from Luke Skywalker’s earlier insistence that he choose only one way of life.
