The Boys Season 5 Confirms Ashley’s New Power (And It’s Wild)

Ashley Barrett returns as a central character in Season 5 of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys, and her newly developed powers are quite unexpected. The last season ended with a major cliffhanger: after discovering Homelander wanted her eliminated, Ashley injected herself with Compound V and suffered intense pain, revealing her balding head. For nearly two years, viewers have wondered what powers this would give her, and Season 5 is finally starting to reveal the answer.

The fifth and final season of The Boys started with big changes for Ashley Barrett, played by Colby Minifie. She’s now the Vice President, but President Calhoun is secretly controlled by Homelander, played by Antony Starr.

In the Season 5 premiere of The Boys, Ashley repeatedly insists she can read minds, making the claim both during a press conference in the White House and in an Oval Office interview with Firecracker, alongside her very religious fiancé. But there’s a hidden complexity to Ashley’s supposed powers that isn’t immediately obvious.

Okay, so I just watched this scene, and it’s… something. Ashley preemptively answers a reporter who hadn’t even finished his thought, insisting she ‘knows exactly what he’s thinking.’ It’s a pretty blatant hint that she’s claiming to be a telepath. The weird part? The show is trying to build this mystery around her newly discovered abilities, but she acts like she’s been hiding them for ages. It feels a little inconsistent, honestly, like they’re retconning her backstory on the fly.

I understand your concerns. Being an American with extraordinary abilities doesn’t affect my loyalty to the country. It’s questions like these – fueled by prejudice against people with powers – that made me hesitant to reveal my abilities for so long.

So, I just read that Ashley is engaged to Daveed Diggs’ character from Hamilton – his character, Oh-Father, is a superhero type who also runs a big Christian charity called Samaritan’s Embrace. Apparently, Ezekiel used to be in charge there. They told an interviewer they met at the National Prayer Breakfast, and they both really believe in the idea of America becoming a Christian nation. It’s definitely an interesting detail about their characters and relationship!

Vought’s superhero couple both insisted it was love at first sight. Ashley explained she’d used her telepathy to predict his words, and excitedly showed off her ability, saying, “I knew he was gonna say that. It’s tough being married to a mind reader!”

In episode 2, “Teenage Kix,” we learn what Ashley’s superpower actually is, and it turns out it’s more complex than just reading minds. A key moment happens at Vought Tower where the Vice President is hesitant to speak, but she’s compelled to do so after seemingly hearing her own inner voice urging her to “speak up.”

Near the end of Episode 2, Ashley takes off a wig, shockingly revealing a second face on the back of her head, which she calls a “psychic fing tumor.” This strange second face appears to symbolize the battle within Ashley between her desire to do what’s right and her need to survive, with it reminding her that she once wanted to make a positive impact on the world.

After the second episode, it’s still unknown if Ashley truly can read minds, or if the voices she hears are just her strong intuition guiding her.

Will Ashley Come Out on Top in The Boys Season 5?

One thing is clear from The Boys: Ashley Barrett is a determined survivor who will do whatever it takes to succeed. Seeing Homelander and Vought’s supes gaining more power last season, she adopted a pragmatic approach – if she couldn’t defeat them, she’d align herself with them.

While that choice likely saved Ashley’s life, her superpowers didn’t develop as she’d hoped. The resulting transformation is quite disturbing and probably won’t make her popular with the public. She might be trying to conceal how truly unpleasant her mutation is to protect her reputation.

Although Ashley probably won’t be the one to ultimately defeat Homelander, it’s likely she’ll turn against him when his power starts to fade in Season 5. Whether that decision will save her or lead to her downfall remains to be seen, but she’s often managed to succeed in the past.

Despite Homelander likely being defeated by the end of The Boys, creator Eric Kripke has hinted that the world of the show—the ‘VoughtVerse’—will have plenty of new stories to tell in several spin-offs after Season 5. He describes it as a bit of a ‘wild west’ with many possibilities. It will be fascinating to see what happens with characters like Ashley, particularly if she continues to hold power as we saw in the Oval Office.
