Actor Sebastian Stan, who was nominated for an Academy Award, has accepted the lead part in a fresh film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s renowned gothic novel Frankenstein. Right now, he is engaged in filming for his upcoming role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following his performance in the recently premiered Thunderbolts movie. In 2026, on December 18, you’ll see him reprise his famous character as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in Avengers: Doomsday, which will be shown in cinemas.
Who’s involved in the new Frankenstein movie?
The project has been verified by renowned Romanian director Radu Jude, who is widely recognized for his work on the 2021 comedy-drama “Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn” and the upcoming black comedy “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World,” set to release in 2023. Both films garnered acclaim at film festivals, with the former receiving the Golden Bear award at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival, and the latter earning the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno Film Festival.
In a recent conversation with Cultura la dubă, Jude shared that Stan was the one who initially proposed the idea of teaming up for a collaboration. This sparked his suggestion to create a film that would depict the authentic experience of CIA prisons in Romania, intertwined with the legend of Frankenstein’s tale.
Jude mentioned that Sebastian reached out to him some time back, expressing an interest in collaboration. However, he was unsure about it at the time. Later, while working on the sound design for Dracula, a concept popped into his mind – merging the real-life history of CIA prisons in Romania from two decades ago with the classic tale of Frankenstein’s monster. This is what Jude revealed.
Sebastian agreed, prompting me to begin drafting the script. However, it’ll require some time to complete. I truly value him as an actor – he’s incredibly talented and appears quite inquisitive. So, I thought to myself, ‘Why not?’
Upon Sebastian’s affirmation, I commenced writing the script, but it will take a while. I can’t help but admire him; he’s an exceptional actor with a keen curiosity. So, I figured, why not proceed?
More recently, Jude claimed another Silver Bear Award for Best Screenplay at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, this time for his latest comedy-drama movie titled Kontinental ’25. Following the success of Frankenstein, Jude is set to release a new adaptation of Dracula. The world premiere for this production will take place this weekend at the 78th Locarno Film Festival.
