Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Review: The Best Star Wars Show of the Decade

While recent Star Wars films have been divisive, Maul – Shadow Lord is a fantastic series that revitalizes the franchise and will undoubtedly leave fans wanting more. Maul has been a beloved character for years, and this series delivers exactly what fans have been hoping for.

Maul – Shadow Lord revisits the beginning of the Empire, right after Maul’s defeat on Mandalore in Season 7 of The Clone Wars. The story finds Maul at a low point, having lost his brother, Savage Oppress. Shadow Lord delves into a previously unseen chapter of Maul’s life, offering fans a deeper understanding of the Sith Lord’s motivations and goals in a dangerous new galaxy.

Sam Witwer Delivers a Career-Defining Performance as Maul

Sam Witwer consistently delivers excellent performances as Darth Maul, but he truly shines in Shadow Lord. This isn’t just his best work within the Star Wars universe – it’s a career highlight. He portrays Maul’s voice with a constant sense of barely contained rage, making every line even more frightening. Witwer elevates Maul’s presence in every scene, giving the character incredible depth and weight.

The show truly captures the weight of Maul’s years of suffering, evoking a powerful sense of pain and anger for fans. Sam Witwer delivers a performance that convincingly portrays Maul’s long history of hardship, and it’s central to the series’ emotional resonance. Without his strong portrayal, Maul – Shadow Lord wouldn’t be as compelling.

Sam Witwer brilliantly portrays Maul, knowing exactly when to unleash explosive anger and when to simmer with quiet rage. He captures the character’s depth and complex history, especially in how Maul interacts with those who’ve wronged him, like Rook Kast. With Maul – Shadow Lord, Witwer solidifies his status as one of the greatest Star Wars performers of all time.

Maul – Shadow Lord Perfects What Clone Wars Started

Many fans agree that the storytelling in Maul is exceptional. It builds on everything people loved about The Clone Wars and improves upon it, offering a smooth narrative, stunning action sequences, and animation that truly stands out.

The Maul – Shadow Lord animated series isn’t just the best-looking Star Wars production; it’s one of the most visually stunning animated series ever made. The animation style, which has been developing through The Clone Wars and Bad Batch, reaches its peak here. The backgrounds are richly detailed and colorful, the characters look like they were painted by hand, and the lightsaber battles are incredibly dynamic and fluid.

Maul isn’t just one of the best animated Star Wars series – it actually improves on everything fans already love about Star Wars shows, both animated and live-action. The story flows perfectly, with both the main plot and the secondary storyline complementing each other beautifully. It’s a well-paced story that knows exactly when to slow down and when to ramp up the action.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I think Maul – Shadow Lord really nails what we all love about the animated series, but it takes things to a whole new level with a really smart, intense thriller. Seriously, the story had me on the edge of my seat, and the lightsaber fights? Forget about it – they’re absolutely incredible! This gives us some of the best lightsaber duels ever, and they look amazing. They feel so powerful and unrestrained, which perfectly matches how desperate and fierce Maul is as he fights to survive and claim his place in the galaxy.

Compelling New Characters Fill Out Maul’s First Season

Despite being incredibly captivating, Maul – Shadow Lord also does a great job of introducing compelling new characters. Devon Izara and her mentor, Eeko-Dio Daki, immediately feel relatable and are interesting to follow.

Devon has quickly become a popular character, and she’s fascinating to watch. Gideon Adlon’s performance brings her to life, proving she’s a strong presence in any scene. It’s immediately clear that Devon is unpredictable and her story is compelling, making her a welcome addition for viewers.

Wagner Moura’s Captain Lawson and Richard Ayoade’s loyal droid, Two-Boots, make a fantastic pair in Maul – Shadow Lord. Lawson is a detective straight out of a classic film noir – a type of character rarely seen in Star Wars – and Two-Boots adds to the franchise’s tradition of memorable droids. Both characters are a joy to watch and offer a fresh take on the beloved Star Wars universe.

Maul – Shadow Lord Cements the Sith’s Legacy

As a huge Star Wars fan, I can confidently say that ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ is the best thing to come out of the franchise in years! I’ve loved Maul since he first appeared in ‘The Phantom Menace’ back in 1999, and this show finally delivers a really deep, authentic look into his character and what makes him tick. It’s a dark, intense, and visually amazing adventure that I think will set the standard for Star Wars TV shows going forward.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a fantastic exploration of the darker side of the Star Wars universe, offering a deep look into the mind of one of its most compelling villains. It sets a new standard for Star Wars animated series and is easily among the best TV shows the franchise has ever produced.

The first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord became available on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. New episodes will be released every Monday, with two episodes dropping each week.
