Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episodes 2-3
What’s been really enjoyable about Daredevil: Born Again is how realistic and down-to-earth it is, focusing on street-level crime within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After so many recent projects dealing with huge, universe-spanning threats since Avengers: Endgame, it’s a welcome change to see a story that doesn’t involve alternate realities or time travel.
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again feels as realistic and gritty as the first, and many viewers might even find it more gripping. A seemingly unimportant line delivered by Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk in episode 2 really stood out, especially considering the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve already witnessed alternate realities and the dangers of messing with the multiverse in previous MCU stories, and we know even bigger multiversal challenges are coming in future Avengers films.
While Daredevil: Born Again isn’t suddenly going to become a multiversal epic, it’s inadvertently brushed up against some core multiversal ideas in subtle ways thanks to the growing ambitions of Mayor Wilson Fisk in the new MCU series.
“How Many Worlds Are There?” — Mayor Fisk’s Daredevil: Born Again Goals Evoke The Multiverse Saga
In the second episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Mayor Wilson Fisk explains his grand plans to his wife, making it clear that he aims to expand his influence well beyond New York City.
Vanessa questioned Fisk about his risky dealings with shadowy government agents like Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She couldn’t understand why he was jeopardizing everything they’d achieved – their power and influence – by allowing illegal weapons to pass through his Red Hook port. They already controlled New York City, with Fisk as mayor, and she wondered why he needed to take such a dangerous gamble.
Fisk isn’t satisfied with what he has; he feels a duty to make a difference worldwide and wants to expand his power as much as possible. Vanessa questions how many realms he needs to control, and Fisk simply replies with a smile, “How many worlds are there?”
This Kingpin line is really strong, showing just how ambitious he is and how much further he wants to expand his power beyond New York. But within the larger Multiverse Saga, the line takes on an even bigger meaning. Considering the multiverse exists in the MCU, the answer to Kingpin’s question is actually limitless – there are endless worlds and timelines he could potentially conquer if he could.
This doesn’t mean you should expect Mayor Fisk to suddenly jump between universes. It’s simply a good illustration of how the big ideas from the Multiverse Saga are still present, even in smaller, more realistic Marvel stories – particularly for viewers who have followed the MCU since Endgame.
Kingpin’s Vigilante War Won’t Go Multiversal In The MCU (But It Has In Marvel Rivals)
The hero shooter Marvel Rivals recently launched a new season with a storyline mirroring the events of Daredevil: Born Again. In both, Mayor Fisk imposes martial law on New York and cracks down on vigilantes. Interestingly, this Marvel Rivals season also prominently features the multiverse.
Marvel Rivals is expanding the conflict between Mayor Fisk and vigilantes across multiple realities and timelines, offering fans exciting new ways to experience the Marvel Universe. Plus, with the recent release of a Daredevil skin inspired by the ‘Born Again’ storyline, it’s a fantastic time to be a fan of both gritty street-level action and grand, multiversal adventures.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release Tuesday nights on Disney+.
