Justin Baldoni recently won a significant step in his ongoing legal dispute with Blake Lively. While this is important news, it’s also worth noting the incredible success his show is having online.
Before making the film It Ends With Us, Justin Baldoni was well-known for his role as Rafael Solano on The CW’s popular romantic comedy, Jane the Virgin. The show originally ran from 2014 to 2019, lasting five seasons, and recently, seven years later, it’s become very popular again on streaming services, according to FlixPatrol.
The series debuted on Amazon in the 23rd spot in the U.S. on April 2nd, and its popularity has quickly grown to reach number six. While it’s gaining momentum, it still needs to gain significant traction to overtake the current number one show, Seeking Persephone.
Jane the Virgin Made Love Triangles Popular Again
I absolutely loved Jane the Virgin! It centers around Jane Villanueva, a really relatable woman who grew up with a young mom and is fiercely determined to do things differently. She’s working hard to become a teacher and has this sweet, solid relationship with a detective – she’s even made a conscious decision to save herself for marriage. It’s such a charming setup!
But things don’t go as planned. During a regular clinic visit, she’s accidentally inseminated, and to her surprise, she discovers the sperm donor is her boss, Rafael.
The TV show Jane the Virgin was created by Jennie Snyder Urman and inspired by the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen. It was a humorous take on the telenovela genre, playfully imitating its common tropes.
Gina Rodriguez played Jane, with Justin Baldoni as Rafael and Brett Dier as Michael. The show brought love triangles back into the spotlight, and viewers often found themselves choosing sides between Jane’s two potential partners throughout the series.
The show featured Andrea Navedo, Yael Groblas, Ivonne Coll, and Jaime Camil, and included a younger version of Wednesday Addams played by Jenna Ortega, who also stars in the series Wednesday.
I’m a huge fan of Jane the Virgin, and it’s amazing that it consistently earned perfect scores from critics throughout all five seasons! Plus, audiences clearly loved it too, giving it an incredible 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It really is a special show.
It Ends With Us Legal Drama Is Heading to Trial
The first movie adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel was a huge financial success, earning over $350 million globally on a $25 million budget. However, it quickly became the center of a legal dispute. After the film, It Ends With Us – which addresses domestic violence – was released in August 2024, Blake Lively faced criticism for how she promoted it.
While promoting her new film, the former Gossip Girl star downplayed its heavier themes, presenting it as a fun, romantic comedy instead. She also publicly endorsed her own alcoholic beverage line, Betty Booze, at a film-related event.
A December 2024 article in The New York Times, working with Lively, alleged that Baldoni attempted to damage the actress’s reputation by spreading negative stories about her. Lively stated in the article that she had reported sexual harassment while filming, and that Baldoni responded by trying to silence her publicly.
A complicated and contentious legal dispute has erupted, involving well-known figures like Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Matt Damon, and Taylor Swift. Judge Lewis is overseeing the case in U.S. Federal Court, and it’s scheduled to go to trial on May 18th.
On April 3rd, Lively publicly addressed the situation on social media, posting selected quotes from the judge’s decision. This allows her claims of retaliation, breach of contract, and assisting in retaliation to proceed to trial. However, all direct accusations against Justin Baldoni have been dropped. The remaining charges are now focused on It Ends With Us LLC and TAG Agency, the company Lively believes spread false information about her.
