Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord First Reactions Are In

Early reviews are in for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

This animated series takes place in the Star Wars universe, after the events of Order 66 and the Clone Wars, during the Empire’s early days. Darth Maul is trying to regain control of his criminal organization on the planet Janix and get revenge on Emperor Palpatine and the new government. While pursuing his goals for power and revenge, he meets Devon Izara, a Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66.

Early reactions to the first eight episodes of Maul — Shadow Lord on X are largely very positive. Star Wars Holocron calls the show “dark, moody, vicious, stylized, and exactly what fans of Maul have been waiting for since 1999,” adding that it delivers on its promise of being the first Star Wars series to star a villain. They also note the series feels less like Clone Wars or Rebels and more like crime dramas Heat and The Dark Knight.

John Hoey from The Resistance Broadcast compares this take on Maul to complex crime family leaders like Michael Corleone or Tony Soprano, suggesting he’s a villain you strangely root for despite his actions. Lacey Gilleran, also of The Resistance Broadcast, highlights the series’ exciting blend of Star Wars action and crime thriller elements, complete with lightsaber duels and memorable Maul scenes.

The Children of the Watch podcast suggests that Maul – Shadow Lord isn’t like other crime thrillers, but shares qualities with Andor, the highly praised Star Wars show. They describe it as complex, subtle, emotionally engaging, and surprisingly mature, while still appealing to younger viewers. In fact, they believe it’s not just some of the best Star Wars animation, but some of the best Star Wars content overall.

Jakob Kolness from the Minnesota Film Critics Association praised the show’s stunning visuals and how it represents a significant improvement for Star Wars animation, both in its look and its more mature themes, finding it surprisingly engaging. However, he cautioned that the series still suffers from some familiar problems with Dave Filoni’s work – overly complex storylines, unnecessary plot devices, and a less-than-captivating portrayal of Maul as the central character. Ultimately, he believes the show is best suited for dedicated Star Wars fans.

Early positive feedback suggests the new Star Wars show is off to a strong start, reinforcing the optimism Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni has for its future – especially since it’s already been renewed for a second season. This series is different from Star Wars: Visions or the Tales shows, which are collections of individual stories. Instead, Maul — Shadow Lord is the first Star Wars animated series with a continuing story across multiple seasons since The Bad Batch finished two years ago. Initial reactions show it’s a worthy continuation of that legacy, with many praising the animation as the best it’s ever been.

Darth Maul has been a fan favorite since 1999, and his return in The Clone Wars was a welcome surprise. Now, his new story is doing something different for Star Wars by focusing on a villain as the main character and telling a story firmly rooted in the crime thriller genre. Despite this new direction, fans are also enjoying classic Star Wars elements, like exciting lightsaber fights.

Given its grittier, more sophisticated style, ambitious storytelling, and complex themes, Maul – Shadow Lord is often compared to Andor. However, it might not be as easy for new viewers to get into, as it seems designed primarily for dedicated Star Wars fans. Andor and the first season of The Mandalorian were so popular because they appealed to both newcomers and longtime fans alike, regardless of their previous Star Wars experience.

Despite this, early reactions suggest Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will be another success, even before anyone has seen the last two episodes of season one. The voice cast features Sam Witwer as Maul, alongside Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura (an Academy Award nominee) as Captain Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade as Lawson’s droid partner, Two-Boots.

The new Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ with two episodes on April 6th. After that, two more episodes will be released each week until May 4th.
