Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh) may be leaving The Pitt because of a big decision she’s been considering throughout Season 2. The season really focused on Dr. Mohan and the difficulties she faced as a resident, especially as she tried to manage her personal life and a strained relationship with her mother. She had a tough moment when Dr. Robby challenged her after a panic attack during a patient’s treatment, but they’ve since resolved their differences.
Mohan is currently a central figure in Season 2 of The Pitt, but Variety reports that actress Supriya Ganesh will leave the HBO Max medical drama during Season 3. The departure is described as a creative decision based on the storyline. While the exact reason for her character’s exit hasn’t been revealed, Episode 12 of Season 2 may have hinted at why the senior resident will be leaving Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC).

In Season 2, Episode 12, Dr. Robby suggested that Mohan consider a rotation in geriatrics. This could be the primary reason she leaves her assignment at The Pitt.
Samira Mohan explained they weren’t sure what was causing the issue, but fortunately, none of the patient’s medications were essential for immediate health. She suggested stopping the medications temporarily and having him follow up with his primary care doctor to monitor his condition over the next few weeks.
Dr. Robby suggested discussing the situation with the patient’s family, explaining that simply acknowledging their independence can be incredibly helpful. He then turned to Dr. Mohan, mentioning he’d heard about a potential elective opportunity in geriatrics. He described it as a field that requires both scientific knowledge and a personal touch, noting there’s usually a position available and Dr. Mohan seemed well-suited to the slower pace. Finally, he asked if anyone had seen Dana.
Geriatrics is the branch of medicine dedicated to the care of elderly patients, and Mohan has consistently demonstrated her skill in this area during her two seasons on The Pitt.
Transferring geriatric care away from the busy Emergency Department would be a better fit for Mohan, allowing her to fully utilize her careful and thorough approach to listening to and examining patients’ concerns.

In the season 2 finale of The Pitt, it was revealed that Mohan is now searching for a different fellowship opportunity. This came after she destroyed her original application for an ultrasound fellowship, a decision influenced by her encounter with the new night shift doctor, Dr. Henderson.
The penultimate episode of The Pitt Season 2 will premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, April 9.
Why Mohan’s Exit From The Pitt’s ER Makes Sense for the Character

Season 2 of The Pitt is setting up a heartfelt departure for Dr. Samira Mohan, but it’s a good move for her career – she’s likely to be more successful outside of the emergency room. Fans who were hoping to see a romance between Dr. Mohan and Dr. Abbott will be disappointed, though.
Watching the second season, it’s become really clear that Dr. Mohan is struggling with the intense pressure of the ER. It just doesn’t seem to be a good fit for her – the constant chaos and fast pace are clearly wearing her down, and it’s not playing to her strengths as a doctor. You can really see she’s burning out.
As she finishes her residency, it’s understandable that Mohan would choose a medical specialty she’s passionate about. Leaving the hospital isn’t a setback for her; it’s a chance to shift her focus to geriatrics, a fulfilling new direction that still lets her practice medicine.
Mohan leaving highlights how quickly doctors come and go at teaching hospitals like PTMC. It shows residents are always looking for better opportunities to advance their careers.
