As a huge cinema fan, I’m loving the buzz around Guy Ritchie’s latest series on Prime Video – it’s really taken off! It’s a bit strange though, considering how popular it is, that Prime hasn’t announced a second season yet. I’m hoping they greenlight it soon!
The series Young Sherlock is currently the second most popular show on Prime Video worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. Since premiering on March 4th, it’s consistently been a top 10 hit. Although its ranking has changed a bit over the last month, Young Sherlock is now the No. 2 show in the U.S. on Prime Video.
The continued popularity of Young Sherlock on Prime Video is confirmed by recent Nielsen streaming data from March 2nd to 8th. The series garnered 678 million minutes of viewing time during its first week, making it the sixth most-watched original series across all streaming platforms. It trailed behind Bridgerton, The Night Agent, The Pitt, Love Is Blind, and Paradise in terms of viewership.
What Is Young Sherlock About?
Created by Matthew Parkhill, Young Sherlock tells the story of a young and inexperienced Sherlock Holmes who gets caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University. According to the official description, he’s flawed and undisciplined, and solving this first case—a complex, worldwide conspiracy—will dramatically change his life.
The series features Jude Law as the younger Sherlock Holmes. Dónal Finn and Max Irons play younger versions of James Moriarty and, respectively. Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, and Colin Firth also star in the main cast.
Ritchie was the executive producer of Young Sherlock and directed its first two episodes. Before that, he directed the Sherlock Holmes films released by Warner Bros. in 2009 and 2011, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic detective and Jude Law as Dr. Watson. These films were known for their fast-paced action.
Will Young Sherlock Receive a Second Season?
Considering how well Young Sherlock is performing on Prime Video’s Top 10 list, and the wealth of stories available from Andrew Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes books, it’s unexpected that Prime Video hasn’t renewed the show for another season yet.
Good news for viewers: the show’s executive producer, Simon Maxwell, has said that Young Sherlock was created with the intention of having multiple seasons. While it’s still not certain if Prime Video will renew the show, Maxwell recently told Deadline that the team is already starting to develop ideas for a second season.
The newest take on Sherlock Holmes, called Young Sherlock, is currently the only version whose continuation isn’t guaranteed. CBS canceled it after two seasons, and while The CW’s Sherlock & Daughter might return for another season, that hasn’t been officially announced.
Young Sherlock is available to stream on Prime Video.
