A highlight of The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the brief appearance of Fox McCloud. While it’s been almost ten years since a new Star Fox game was released, dedicated fans immediately recognized the character and his ship, the Arwing. The movie’s huge success is now introducing this space pilot to a whole new audience.

I was so happy to hear that Takaya Imamura, the creator of the original Star Fox game, sent out a message thanking all the new players! It’s really cool that he appreciates us discovering his work now.
A Cross-Generational Moment
A video circulating on X shows a young boy immediately picking up and playing the classic Nintendo 64 game, Star Fox 64, right after coming home from the movies. Even though the game’s graphics aren’t as advanced as today’s games, the boy doesn’t seem to mind. It’s clear that exciting action and dogfights are enjoyable no matter your age. The game’s original artist, Takaya Imamura, saw the video and shared a positive reaction.

I loved how the Super Mario Galaxy Movie really embraced everything that makes Fox McCloud so awesome! They told his story like it was ripped straight from a ’90s cartoon – seriously, think loud guitars and crazy spaceship fights. It was so much fun, and honestly, it’s got a lot of us hoping for a whole movie just about him! While we wait to see if Nintendo and Illumination will make that happen, at least we can always go back and play the games.
If a movie based on the Star Fox series gets made, Nintendo and Illumination seem to have already found their perfect voice actor. Glen Powell, a popular actor in Hollywood, apparently really wanted the part, and his eagerness may have been what led to Star Fox being included in the film.

The choice appears to have pleased fans and also received a thumbs-up from the original creator of Star Fox, showing positive feelings throughout the company, not just within the movie’s production group.
Hollywood Buzz and Developer Approval
For a long time, many fans of classic Nintendo games have felt that the Star Fox series didn’t get the attention it deserved, which is why seeing Fox McCloud appear on screen is always exciting. Recent online speculation points to a possible new Star Fox game coming to the next Nintendo console, the Switch 2. Although Nintendo hasn’t officially announced anything, the timing of these rumors seems intentional.

The popular character’s appearance in a major film, brought to life by a well-known actor, has sparked renewed interest in his original video games. If Nintendo creates a new game that appeals to both longtime fans and new players, the franchise has the potential to become incredibly popular again, extending its reach far beyond the movie and attracting players of all ages.
Passing on Gaming History
Even if we don’t see a Star Fox movie or game anytime soon, the popularity of The Super Mario Bros. Movie shows something important. The film is letting families bond over a shared experience, and it’s sparking interest in the original games. Parents are now able to share the games and characters they grew up with, introducing a new generation to gaming history.
Social media lets artists like Takaya Imamura share special moments with their fans, offering a personal thank you and bridging connections between different generations – something only possible with today’s technology.
