The Boys are coming back in town, but one episode nearly had the team in hot water.
The TV show The Boys became a huge hit when it premiered on Prime Video in 2019. Adapted from the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, showrunner Eric Kripke created a show that completely flipped the superhero genre on its head. It quickly became one of Prime Video’s most-watched shows, consistently topping the charts, and viewers loved its unique blend of violence and satire.
In a recent interview with Polygon, showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that an episode of The Boys almost didn’t air due to its sensitive timing. Originally titled “Assassination Run,” the episode’s name was changed after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on July 13, 2024. The episode, now known as “Season Four Finale,” features Homelander (Antony Starr) planning to kill the President, Robert Singer (Jim Beaver), just days after the attempt on Trump’s life.
Honestly, directing that project was incredibly stressful for me. I was so invested in it, and I really worried it wouldn’t even get to see the light of day – there was a genuine chance they’d hold it back. It actually went all the way up to Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon, for a final decision, and thankfully, he gave the green light!
The only feedback I received was to simply change the title, which they admitted was in poor taste, but ultimately acceptable. I was incredibly relieved they approved it. While I’d had a very stressful day, it felt insignificant compared to everything else happening in the world.
The fifth and final season of The Boys will premiere on Prime Video on April 8th, and fans are already sad to see it end. Creator Eric Kripke has pointed out the show’s unfortunate parallels to current events, with the character Homelander often mirroring the behavior of certain world leaders seen in the news.
What I’ll miss most about the show, besides the people, is having a platform to react to frustrating news stories. It was great to be able to share those thoughts with the writers and reach a large audience. I don’t think we were changing the world, but we had a space to discuss what was happening, and now I just feel lost and frustrated like everyone else, which isn’t a good feeling.
In addition to the original series, The Boys now has two spinoffs: Gen V and The Boys Presents: Diabolical. Another new series, Vought Rising, is in development, and it will explore the backstory of Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles) and his connection to Homelander. With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Boys has become a fan favorite, and viewers are excited to see how the story concludes with the final season, hoping for plenty of action and surprises.
The Boys season 5 will begin on Prime Video on April 8, with episodes releasing weekly.
