Even though HBO Max is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, a very popular movie on the service right now is actually from Disney. The 2004 sci-fi film has recently become one of the top 10 most-watched movies on the streaming platform.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Alien vs. Predator entered HBO Max’s Top 10 Movies chart in the United States at number 10. It’s currently the only science fiction film in the top ten, which is otherwise filled with action movies like Ballerina (at number 1) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (number 2), as well as fantasy films like Dune (number 5) and Dune: Part Two (number 4).
As Easter approaches, the comedy Hop, featuring James Marsden and Russell Brand, is currently number three on the charts. The classic adventure film The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser, is at number six. Rounding out the top ten are The 40 Year Old Virgin at number seven, The Amazing Spider-Man at number eight, and Spider-Man at number nine.
AVP Brought 20th Century Studios’ 2 Major Sci-Fi Franchises Together
The movie Alien vs. Predator came out in 2004. Fans had speculated about a connection between the Alien and Predator universes since Predator 2 (released in 1990) showed a Xenomorph skull as a trophy on a Predator spaceship. Paul W. S. Anderson, who is famous for directing the first Resident Evil movies, wrote and directed Alien vs. Predator.
The movie Alien vs. Predator follows a group of scientists who find themselves in danger when an ancient conflict between Aliens and Predators reignites inside a pyramid discovered in Antarctica. The film stars Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen, Ewen Bremner, Colin Salmon, and Tommy Flanagan.
Critics weren’t very impressed with Alien vs. Predator, and it received a low score of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. The website described the film as having plenty of gore but lacking genuine scares, and criticized the characters as being underdeveloped, making the monster battle feel unengaging.
Despite receiving poor reviews, the first Aliens vs. Predator film still attracted moviegoers and earned $177 million worldwide on a $70 million budget, which led to a sequel in 2007 called Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. Requiem also received negative reviews, but still grossed over $130 million internationally.
A New Alien vs. Predator May Be on the Way
For over a decade, the Alien vs. Predator series struggled to find success, with Ridley Scott’s Prometheus being the only significant hit. However, after Disney bought 20th Century Studios in 2019, both franchises have seen a revival with new films directed by Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, Predator: Badlands, Predator: Killer of Killers) and Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus).
A new Alien vs. Predator movie is potentially in the works, according to Steve Asbell, a leader at 20th Century Studios. Although nothing is official yet, director Sam Alvarez hinted in 2024 that another installment should happen, especially considering the continued popularity of both franchises.
Alien vs. Predator is currently streaming on HBO Max.
